Shiny Metal Briefcase

Q. Thanks thanks for the help with automating my USB AutoPlay. Brown leather to shiny metal? Now that's a cool idea! How do you do that?
James Kanjo

A. It's easy to change the Briefcase icon, for both existing and Briefcases, provided you're comfortable editing the registry.

  1. Log on as a member of the administrators group.
  2. Click Start -> Run, type <B>regedit<B> and press Enter. This opens Registry Editor.
  3. Browse to the following key and select it:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{85BBD0920-42A0-1069-A2E4-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon

  4. Before you make any changes, click File -> Export, type DefaultIcon in the 'File name' field and click Save. This will save 'DefaultIcon.reg' to your desktop. If you stuff up the registry edit, double-click this file to restore the registry the way it was originally.
  5. In the right pane, right-click (Default) in the Name column and click Modify.
  6. Change the number following syncui.dll from 0 to 1.
  7. Click OK and close Registry Editor.
  8. Restart your PC.

If you're not comfortable editing the registry, double-click the file ShinyMetal.reg below to change the briefcase icon to shiny metal. If you recon that's a bad look, double-click BrownLeather.reg to change it back to the original.

Not that these links will alter your system's registry - use with caution.
