Shiny Metal Briefcase
Q. Thanks thanks for the help with automating my USB AutoPlay. Brown leather to shiny metal? Now that's a cool idea! How do you do that?
James Kanjo
A. It's easy to change the Briefcase icon, for both existing and Briefcases, provided you're comfortable editing the registry.
- Log on as a member of the administrators group.
- Click Start -> Run, type <B>regedit<B> and press Enter. This opens Registry Editor.
- Browse to the following key and select it:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{85BBD0920-42A0-1069-A2E4-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon
- Before you make any changes, click File -> Export, type DefaultIcon in the 'File name' field and click Save. This will save 'DefaultIcon.reg' to your desktop. If you stuff up the registry edit, double-click this file to restore the registry the way it was originally.
- In the right pane, right-click (Default) in the Name column and click Modify.
- Change the number following syncui.dll from 0 to 1.
- Click OK and close Registry Editor.
- Restart your PC.
If you're not comfortable editing the registry, double-click the file ShinyMetal.reg below to change the briefcase icon to shiny metal. If you recon that's a bad look, double-click BrownLeather.reg to change it back to the original.
Not that these links will alter your system's registry - use with caution.
