Although Vista's Setup program knows about XP and will automatically install to dual boot, XP's Setup isn't so cluey. It will overwrite Vista's bootloader and make it so you can't boot to Vista any more. You can easily fix this problem using freeware VistaBootPRO 3.3 from http://vistabootpro.org.

However, VistaBootPRO needs .NET Framework 2.0 (http://tinyurl.com/758p8) or better, and to install .NET Framework you need Windows Installer 3.0 or better (http://tinyurl.com/accpy).

Seasoned installations of XP will already have Windows Installer because most applications install it during their own installation process. However, for a fresh XP installation you'll need to install Windows Installer yourself before installing .NET Framework.

The accompanying Step-by-step video guide shows what to do next.

OS: Windows XP (Home, PRO, x64, MCE 2005),
2003 Server, Vista, or Longhorn Server.
All systems must have .NET 2.0 Framework
which in turn requires Windows Installer 3.0
