Quake Genre: 3D shooter Classification: MA15+ First reviewed: N/A 3D accelerated score: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() From: iD Software List price: $79.95 Download the Open-GL 3Dfx patch from: ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/unsup/glq3_28.zip Quake follows in the footsteps of Doom, firmly entrenching a place for itself in the PC gaming 'Hall of Fame'. The definitive 3D shooter, Quake has the player navigating a vast network of caverns, rooms, tunnels, streams and other terrain, while laying waste to a variety of hideous monsters. The standard version, released a couple of years ago, set a new benchmark for 3D gaming. Finally fans of the first-person action genre could enjoy the spectacle of truly three-dimensional character sprites. On the downside, the graphics suffered from blockiness and pixellation with some very average weapon effects. Quake also had a tendency to run very slowly on anything but the most powerful hardware, particularly in higher resolutions. If there was ever a candidate for 3D acceleration, then Quake would surely be first in line. In fact, I would even go so far as to say that Quake and its offspring are almost single-handedly responsible for the introduction of PC 3D acceleration hardware. So how does the Open-GL version of Quake shape up? Very well indeed. The first thing which becomes apparent in accelerated Quake are the increased colour depths: 64 thousand colours add clarity to the fairly gloomy terrain. Anti-aliasing, mip-mapping and bilinear filtering eliminate the blockiness which detracted from the splendour of the 3D monsters: now they can be fully appreciated in all their glory. The inclusion of alpha-blending allows you to turn on water reflections and translucency, which further adds to the realism of the game. Unfortunately the weapon effects and explosions are still fairly mediocre when compared to other contemporary offerings. The speed of Open-GL accelerated Quake also improved allowing respectable frame-rates despite the added visual detail. So, not surprisingly, Open-GL Quake is vastly superior to the original game. It finally fulfils all of the ambitious promises made by iD when they were hyping the initial release of the standard version nearly two years ago.
