Search engines

Lycos
http://www.lycos.com
Bandwidth: Medium
Best viewing: Any browser
Rating: 9/10

Lycos is an old-timer when it comes to Web search engines, but it's recently undergone a total revamp and come up sparkling, so it was certainly worth reviewing again. Of course you can do the usual keyword searching, but you can also categorise your searches, look for sounds or graphics, or use a host of other nifty tools for locating content. If you've deserted Lycos for one of the newer search engines, it's about time you paid it another visit.

Yahoo!
http://www.yahoo.com
Bandwidth: Medium
Best viewing: Any browser
Rating: 9/10

Yahoo!, too, has added some new features. The snazziest, MapIt!, is unfortunately a US-specific feature. Even so, it's worth trying it out just to see how extraordinarily useful Internet search engines are becoming. Enter a US location (down to street level), and MapIt! will display on a street map services and stores in a multitude of categories that are close to your location.

AltaVista Australia
http://www.altavista.yellowpages.com.au
Rating: 9/10

For brute content searching of the Web and newsgroups, nothing beats Alta Vista. It has some powerful parametres to enhance searches and generally returns better results than the other search engines. This Australian mirror should be even faster than the American site! See Using AltaVista for some tips!

AltaVista
http://www.altavista.digital.com

If by some chance the Australian mirror of AltaVista is down (highly unlikely) try the main American site. See Using AltaVista for some tips!

DejaNews
http://www.dejanews.com

DejaNews claims to hold newsgroup messages longer than Alta Vista. Its real strength is being able to create specialised query filters.

InfoSeek
http://www2.infoseek.com
Rating: 7/10

InfoSeek is a variant of the Alta Vista approach with the option of subscribing to a personalised research service as well.

Infoseek Ultra
http://ultra.infoseek.com/

Lycos
http://www.lycos.com/
Rating: 8/10

An old favourite until AltaVista came along, Lycos has improved dramatically over the last year.
