The Internet is not the only way to go online -- bulletin boards
(BBSs) can provide shareware, information and contact with
other people as effectively if not on the same grand scale.
Australian BBS Registry
http://www.bbsregistry.com.au
Want to find a bulletin board in your area or on a
specific subject? The Australian BBS Registry is the way
to find it. Traditionally a bulletin board itself, it has
recently expanded onto the Internet. You can also FTP to
ftp.bbsregistry.com.au/bbslist. -- Link Harris
Argonaut BBS
http://www.argo.net.au
It's not unusual for a BBS to put a PR page on the Web,
but Argonaut BBS is one of the few that lets surfers
actually dip into the board with their Web browser. The
BBS Web site is located at the above URL, however, first-time users
should go via http://argo.net.au (Argonaut's public Web server),
choose item two to move to the BBS and register to create a free
BBS account. This lets you read messages, browse the file areas and
download a limited selection. Paid members have full run of the file
and message areas, and those with a Java-enabled Web browser or
standard IRC client can also link up with the BBS's online chat
sessions. Both BBSs are offline for weekly maintenance each
Monday morning. -- Link Harris
