Installation and System Requirements

Platforms supported by Templeton

• OS/2
• Windows 95 (Not yet available.)
• Linux for an x86 processor
• SunOS or Solaris for a Sparc station
• IRIX 5.3 and 6.x for the Iris, Indigo, O2, Onyx, and related systems. This platform is only available by request.
• HPUX 10.20 for 700 or 800 series systems. This platform is only available by request.

Templeton's interface has been designed for compatability between operating system; you do not need to learn a new interface when changing operating systems. The current revision of Templeton is text-only (no graphical user interface). If there is a show of support, then I will create a GUI in future releases.

Note: Hard disk requirements are not listed. The Templeton executable is relatively small. However, the data copied from remote WWW sites may be large and you should probably have between 2 and 50 Megs of disk space for mirroring (depending on your usage).

OS/2

Required Files:

• The Templeton executable: templeton.exe. This file should be placed in the tcpip/bin directory. The tcpip/bin directory should be in your path.
• The Templeton configuration file: Templeton.cfg or Templeto.cfg. The file with the system defaults should be placed in the directory specified by your ETC environment variable. (Use "set ETC" to display the current ETC directory.)
• The EMX runtime libraries version 0.9a or later. This is available via anonymous FTP from Hobbes or OS/2 CD-ROM from the os2/unix subdirectory. Templeton was compiled using:

  EMX : revision = 50
  EMXIO : revision = 50
  EMXLIBC : revision = 50
  EMXLIBCM : revision = 50
  EMXLIBCS : revision = 50
  EMXWRAP : revision = 50

  Please make sure your libraries are revision 50 or higher, using the emxrev.cmd command. Older libraries may cause Templeton to abort.
• ANSI display support enabled. To determine the current display status, run ANSI.EXE at the command prompt. To enable the ANSI display, either run "ANSI.EXE ON" at the command prompt or place "DEVICE=ANSI.SYS" in your config.sys. ANSI support comes standard with OS/2.
• The testcfg.sys device driver. This comes with OS/2 and should already be installed in your config.sys file.

Windows 95

System Requirements: Windows 95, TCP/IP support. May work with other network protocols. A 32-bit winsock DLL, usually called wsock32.dll (comes with Win95).

Currently there is no installation script for Templeton. This will be added in later releases.

Required Files:

• The Templeton executable: twin95.exe. This file should be placed within a directory in your path.
• The Templeton configuration file: Templeto.cfg. The file with the system defaults should be placed in the the same directory as the executable.

Release notes:

• Registration for IP addresses and subnets is not yet implemented. Only specific machine registration is currently permitted.
• twin95.exe may work with Windows NT (untested) but will probably not work with Windows 3.1 or Win32s.
• Long filenames are not supported.
• IP registration is not supported (yet).
• Machine code registration is not available yet, preventing public release.
• Keyboard does not work yet, requiring non-interactive mode operation.

Not yet released.

Linux

Required Files:

• The Templeton executable: tlinux. This file should be placed in the /etc/bin or /etc/local/bin (or your own favorite BIN) directory. You may also wish to create a symbolic link from tlinux to templeton.
• The Templeton configuration file: templeton.cfg. This file should exist in the /etc directory for the system defaults.
• Individual users may use a .templetonrc configuration file in their home directories.

Release Notes:

• For single machine registration, this executable must run with effective super-user access, otherwise, it will only run in unregistered mode. This can be done either by setting the effective user ID or effective group ID of Templeton to match the ownership of /dev/mem.

  For example (from my home machine):

  % ls -l /dev/mem

  % chmod g+s tlinux
  

  Technically, the hostid of a Linux system is the IP address of the primary network interface. Because this "hostid" may change without notice (moving the computer, installing/removing new interface cards, dynamic IP addresses over PPP, etc.) Templeton must access /dev/mem in order to identify a unique host ID. This requirement is only necessary for single host registration, not for registering an IP address or subnet.

• Because Templeton may be used to start other applications, it is not recommended to run Templeton as root or from a privileged account. After determining the registration, Templeton sets the effective user and group IDs to match the person who started the program. This is an effort toward system security. Applications started by Templeton run as the user, and not as a privileged user or group.

To run Templeton, type tlinux at the command prompt. Optionally, the executable may be renamed to templeton.

The Pwd64 executable is called pwd64 and the Reginfo executable is called reginfo in the Linux 1.2.13 distribution.

SunOS and Solaris

Release note: A Solaris-native version is currently unavailable due to a curses bug.

Required Files:

• The Templeton executable. For SunOS or Solaris in SunOS compatability mode, use tsunos. You may also wish to create a symbolic link from tsunos to templeton. The executable should be placed in the /etc/bin or /etc/local/bin directory (or somewhere in your PATH)
• The Templeton configuration file: templeton.cfg. This file should exist in the /etc directory for the system defaults.
• Individual users may use a .templetonrc configuration file in their home directories.

The Pwd64 executable is called pwd64 and the Reginfo executable is called reginfo in the SunOS 4.1.3 distribution.

IRIX 5.3 and above

The SGI version is not included in the distribution but can be made available upon request: templeton@bmtmicro.com

Required Files:

• The Templeton executable. For IRIX, use tsgi. Executables for other IRIX versions may be available upon request. You may also wish to create a symbolic link from tsgi to templeton. The executable should be placed in the /etc/bin or /etc/local/bin directory (or somewhere in your PATH)
• The Templeton configuration file: templeton.cfg. This file should exist in the /etc directory for the system defaults.
• Individual users may use a .templetonrc configuration file in their home directories.

HPUX 10.20

The HPUX version is not included in the distribution but can be made available upon request: templeton@bmtmicro.com
