![]() | The Marilyn Scandal by Sandra Shevey
Publication: W. Morrow & Co. 1988. USA. ISBN: 0-688-08219-x. Details: Hardback. 311 pages. Contains: 24 pages of photos (b&w). Bibliography. Index. Boy does this book run hot and cold. On one hand, the author has done fresh research, interviewing the likes of Whitey Snyder and Joshua Logan - a welcome respite from the sloppy rehash biographies that inevitably come out each year; on the other hand, she repeats without question some easily disproven apocryphal stories about Marilyn, misquotes dialogue from Marilyn's movies, and makes unusual assertions without identifying her source for the information. Don't let the title fool you: the book is essentially a biography, though there are tidbits here and there regarding the author's belief that Marilyn did not die by her own hand. Perhaps the lurid and uninformative title (given that the book is a biography, and not a conspiracy-theory diatribe) was a misguided attempt by the publisher to generate sales? |
