Special Report: Fashion Week New York, the Spring 1997 Collections

Overall, there's less loud color simply for the sake of loud color this year. Todd Oldham, pictured, known for his sometimes too-brilliant colors, offers selections that are more muted this year, setting the stage for a more conservative trend.

There are some changes from the business perspective as well. There is a more than palpable move to create designs that bring the per-outfit prices on some selections into a middle range. Very few can afford the customary $2,500 many ensembles fetch. Others find the low-priced selection to mundane. Finding a middle ground is becoming fashionable, not only here, but worldwide. The D by DKNY collection from Donna Karan is one such example of a middle-priced line.
