1. My elevation goes up
and down several hundred feet. Am I doing something wrong or do I
have a defective unit?
- There is nothing wrong with your unit. Elevation is the least
accurate GPS calculation. This is common to all civilian GPS
receivers and there are three major sources of elevation error:
a. Selective Availability
b. Atmospheric and Ionospheric conditions which delay
signal transmission
c. Signal bounce, or multipath, which introduces delayed
signals to calculations
2. Can I attach my own
power supply to your unit?
- Yes. You would need a power/data cable for the Trailblazer XL
or Meridian XL. You would need a power/data module for the GPS
2000 XL, 3000 XL and 4000 XL. If you use a non-Magellan power/data
cable or module, you will void the warranty and may damage your
unit.
3. What can I hook the
power/data cable to?
- The 6-pin Trailblazer XL and Meridian XL can take from 9-16
volts DC.
- The 5-pin Trailblazer XL and Meridian XL can take from 10-35
volts DC.
- Any electronic device that can receive NMEA data such as:
a. Personal computers
b. Track plotters
c. Fish finders
d. Boat autopilots
- Differential Beacon Receiver
- External alarm (only for Meridian XL and Trailblazer XL).
- Alarm must be at most 12 volts DC with no more than 150
milliAmp rating.
4. How can I hook up my
unit to my PC?
- Using the 6-pin Trailblazer XL or Meridian XL power/data
cable, connect the orange wire to pin 2 and the brown wire to pin
5 of the DB-9 connector.
- Using the 5-pin Trailblazer XL or Meridian XL power/data
cable, connect the orange wire to pin 2 and the black wire to pin
5 of the DB-9 connector.
- Using the GPS 3000 XL or GPS 4000 XL power/data module,
connect the yellow wire to pin 2 and a jumper from the black wire
to pin 5 of a DB-9 connector.
5. How can I get better
than 15 meters accuracy?
- You can use a Differential Beacon Receiver if you are within
transmission range of a differential beacon transmitter. A DBR
will get accuracies to around 12 to 15 meters.
6. Can my unit be
connected to any other manufacturer's differential
beacon receiver?
- Yes, if the other DBR outputs differential in an RTCM 104
format.
7. Can I download and
upload my stored waypoints to and from a PC?
- The NAV DLX-10, GPS 3000 XL, and Meridian XL can.
8. Will I lose my
waypoints and settings when I remove the batteries?
- When you take out the batteries, you will have up to 10
minutes to replace them before memory is lost.
9. How many batteries
does it use and how long do the batteries last?
- The Trailblazer XL and Meridian XL each take 3 AA batteries.
They can last up to 6 hours of continuous use and 24 hours in
battery saver mode.
- The GPS 2000 XL, 3000 XL, and 4000 XL each use 4 AA batteries.
They can last up to 24 hours of continuous use.
10. How much time will I
have when the Low Battery warning comes up?
- Around 30 minutes of battery life is left. If you shut the
unit off when the warning first appears, the memory can be
maintained from 2 to 3 weeks.
11. How long can I store
waypoints?
- The Trailblazer XL and Meridian XL's memory will be maintained
for up to three months with a fresh set of batteries.
- The GPS 2000 XL, 3000 XL, 4000 XL's memory will be maintained
for up to 6 months with a fresh set of batteries.
12. My unit will not
enter waypoints.
- Unit is probably set to Deg/Min and the user is trying to
enter Deg Min Sec coordinates. Go back to SETUP and reset
coordinate setting to Deg Min and retry entering waypoints.
13. My unit won't erase
waypoints.
14. My screen
scrolls.
- It might be a keypad problem. Call Magellan customer support.
15. What is the
difference between the Trailblazer XL and the
Meridian XL?
- The Trailblazer XL has most of the Meridian XL's features plus
adds 4 more features.
a. user-defined coordinate system
b. display of a second coordinate system
c. can store up to 25 messages, with up to 26 characters
each message
d. 2 additional landmark projection capabilities
- Map projection
- Triangulation
16. What is the
difference between the GPS 2000 XL, 3000 XL and
4000 XL?
- The GPS 2000 XL can store 200 waypoints and 1 routes. It has
five navigation screens: position, main navigation, pointer and
plotter.
- The GPS 3000 XL has everything the GPS 2000 XL has, plus 1
extra screen, extended antenna and upload/download capability. It
adds TD coordinates and waypoint projection.
- The GPS 4000 XL has everything the GPS 3000 XL has except TD
coordinates. The GPS 4000 XL adds a user-defined coordinate
system, displays a second coordinate system, can store up to 25
landmark messages and has two more landmark projections.
17. What is the
difference between the GPS 2000 XL, 3000 XL, 4000 XL,
Meridian XL and the Trailblazer
XL?
- The GPS 3000 XL and Meridian XL have similar software
features.
- The GPS 4000 XL and Trailblazer XL have similar software
features.
- The GPS 2000 XL, 3000 XL, 4000 XL are smaller, lighter and can
last up to 24 hours.
- The Trailblazer XL and Meridian XL have larger screens, larger
keypads, removable antenna, ability to connect to an external
alarm and 6 hours of battery life.
18. What is the screen
size and the pixel size?
- Screen size is 2-1/4" L by 1-3/4" H
- Pixel size is 64 by 80
19. What is the maximum
speed?
- The unit will display up to 951 mph or 999 knots
- The NMEA data output only goes to 99.9 mph or 99.9 knots
