The Q&A Message Board is like an electronic bulletin board where anyone on the World Wide Web can "post" messages. Here you can ask questions, make or respond to comments, and even suggest Internet resources you think other Web surfers would find interesting or helpful.
To post your message or comments, use this form to type in your message then hit the "post this message" button. This will reload the entire page and you will then see your message at the top. Check back the next day for answers to your comments.
Key Pal - Remote Computer | Vincent James, netlingo@10mb.com, Wed May 7 23:56:18 1997 |
A Key Pal is like a pen pal but instead uses a keyboard instead of a pen usually because they are writing letters in the form of e-mail rather than on paper and regular or snail mail. A remote computer is simply a computer which is in another location from where ever you are.

Trojan Horse | Vincent James, netlingo@10mb.com, Fri Apr 25 20:05:25 1997 |
Trojan Horse is a type of computer virus which comes disguised as a program. People download this program usually from the Internet because they think that the program is of some use, but once they start it up it could perhaps erase your hard drive or just wreak havoc all over your system. Recently there has been a discovery of a Trojan Horse type virus which comes in the form of a file called AOL4FREE.COM this file should NOT be downloaded to your system by any means. The name comes from the Greek legend of a horse that looks benevolent but really hold trouble.

Cyber Language Use | Vincent James, netlingo@10mb.com, Tue Apr 22 08:36:44 1997 |
Hi Sandra, I believe your message was answered a while ago and since we just updated this message board it might have gotten moved to the Q&A Archive which is going up in a few days. Anyhow this Cyber Language as you call it is indeed here to stay however it is constantly evolving making determinations as to whether email or e-mail and which is the correct usage , a difficult task. We try to understand the the way people use these terms and make a decision based largely on that. About 60% of all the terms in this dictionary are terms which not only should but will be incorporated at some point into the english language. The others are slang and jargon used by the cyber "in" crowd but we feel it is imporatnt to present all terms as they are being used on the Internet. If you want to discuss this issue further please drop me a private e-mail at the above address.

Hi everyone! I had a message up, but it looks like it was deleted. I'm looking for anyone who'd like to give me some feedback regarding cyberlanguage - smilies, acronyms, etc. Do you consider it jargon? slang? new words for the English language? Passing fad or permanent? Your thoughts?

Document contains no data | Vincent James, netlingo@10mb.com, Wed Apr 16 07:07:26 1997 |
The message could come up for several reasons. The most common reason other than that the file is indeed an empty file containing no information, is probably that the HTML file you are trying to access is being written to at that exact moment or the server was being asked to produce the file for you, so the server sends what ever it has written thus far.

Branding | Vincent James, netlingo@10mb.com, Sun Apr 13 13:38:03 1997 |
Branding is a term which now that you mention it I will be adding to the dictionary. In the meantime, basically what it refers to is a company's logo or name and slogan which appears on a Web page. Branding the Web pages simply means putting this logo in a consistent spot on the page usually the same size and color. This gives the user the sense they are using a product.

Most programs you use on your computer have files which have these little extra tags known as extensions. Clearing out of Hard Drive | Vincent James, netlingo@10mb.com, Mon Apr 7 15:26:39 1997 |
I imagine what you want to do is release your browser cache from holding on to pages you have visited on the Web. With MIE you can do this by going VIEW-OPTIONS-NAVIGATION there is an option there to CLEAR HISTORY which would be the same as in Netscape Navigator under NETWORK PREFERENCES - CLEAR MEMORY CACHE. This would in essence delete any temporary Internet HTML or graphic files which your browser was holding on to for you.

We have this standing disagreement in our office concerning the correct pronunciation of the plural form of a computer mouse. I say that the plural term is MOUSES. Others say it is MICE. What is your humble opinion? I know this is probably a miniscule subject in relation to other topics you would probably prefer to discuss, but if I am right, it bugs the @#%#$ out of me to hear it mis-pronounced! If I am wrong, I need to develop a taste for crow. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

In response to Matthias' message below about where to find sites on the Web which discuss the Internet's influence on the English language -- you've found it babe! This is Net Lingo - The Internet Lanugage Dictionary and we put this thing together because there are no other sites which house this info. We are the semantics storehouse of cyberspace. So, once you get your thesis done, please pass the findings our way and help contribute to "netlingo literacy" on the Web. Thanks, the Net Lingo Mistress.
Web style guides | Erin Jansen, netlingo@sitesatellite.com, Tue Jan 14 11:40:39 1997 |
Dear Scott, There are several style guides online but they primarily deal with print. Perhaps Copy Editor or The Slot has a section covering Web style. Wired Style:Principles of English Usage in the Digital Age is probably your best bet, although I personally recommend just spending time online, reading through several e-zines and homepages to see what the Web voice and attitude is. Good Luck!

Net Pocket Dictionary | Vincent James, netlingo@10mb.com, Sat Jan 4 10:26:21 1997 |
Hi Elly,
There is always some kind of problem with AOL unfortunatley. Are you
using AOL 3.0? The Pocket Dictionary uses Javascript which is not
supported by the earlier versions of AOL which is still pretty commonly
used and you probably need a healthy amount of RAM as well.
Luckily you still can access the dictionary using the browse menu
or look up menu.
Vincent
ps. FYI using all upper case letters as you did on your posting means that you are shouting.
congratulations | marc-paul bloome, mpbloome@juno.com, Sat Jan 4 06:04:47 1997 |
Absolutely great desing and, even more important, some sense of what they hell this is. Many home pages are so introspective that one feels the desinger/owner is contemplating his or her navel or telling the story of a great restaurant in Sheboygan Wisconsin. Erin, if you remember, when we sat together, I said the one thing i learned about this or any other communicatons medium is to start with the concept that the reader has "NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE" of what one is conveying. And that truly applies to the Web. I just downloaded NSNBC Offline, and it was put ont he Web by the combined Miscrosoft and NBC internet operations. And it doe s not tell you how it really works or, if it does not seem to work. offline to get all the news, what to do. And that is MS and NBC. Also remember that 40% of the people on the Web are still using 3.1! As far as Morro Bay and Pacific Heights, believe me, that is the best of all possible worlds. We lived in London, about tow blocks from where Dom and Ellen live and we know the area well. What you have can't be beat, anywhere. Question? Why "post comments" when every one else uses "send" "Post" is a lovely word, but seldom used in the US, from my experience, other than as "Post-it" notes, but then that does not connote mailing, whic is, I belive, your intent. Much love from both of us. And you can always stat with us when and if you come to NY.

pipeline burst cache | Vincent James, netlingo@10mb.com, Tue Dec 17 23:30:09 1996 |
This type of secondary cache is an advanced type of SRAM installed on the motherboard to boost computer performance. Pipeline burst SRAM is commonplace now in motherboard market, where it replaced the older Sync Burst cache, which works less efficiently with fast processors.
