HIGH VOLUME PRODUCTION

All SGS-THOMSON's Smartcard products are based on the same high volume process technologies as our leading range of Non-Volatile Memories, for which we are the world leader - with, for example, a 25% market share in EPROMs and almost 15% in the total electrically programmable nonvolatile memories sector. In fact SGS-THOMSON has delivered closed to one Billion Smartcard products and today holds a 38% (by Dollar value) market share.

STRONG FUNDING FOR R&D

The Company has been the leading European investor in non-volatile memory technology under the JESSI program for the past 10 years and continues to fund this R&D strongly, unlike any other competitor in Smartcard products.

LONG TERM COMMITMENT

This total, successful involvement in non-volatile memories has lead to a high volume manufacturing capacity with internal second source wafer fabrication facilities at different sites, capable of delivering millions of ICs every week in a dependable way, over the long term.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

The continued investment in the lastest techologies, for example FLASH Memories, follows a clear technology roadmap and will provide tomorrow's Smartcard products with the processes they need to meet our customer's expectations. Already SGS-THOMSON is a leader in high density Smartcard products with up to 64K bit EEPROMs on our chips, able to operate at supply voltages as low as 2.7 Volts. These advanced products are being delivered today for the new generation of portable cellular telephones.

AND MICROMODULE PACKAGING

Many of our customers prefer to purchase the Smartcard products packaged in the Micromodule package, ready to mount in the plastic card. SGS-THOMSON has a large, advanced module capacity to meet this need.
