Verifying the modem is dialing properly

Dialling Properties

Determine if your modem is going through a switchboard, which requires you to dial a '9' or some other number(s) to get an outside line. If so, you will need to amend the dialing properties to reflect this.
To get the control panel, click on the 'Start' () button, then click on 'settings', this will bring up your 'control panels'.
Double click on the 'modems' icon (). This should bring up the following panel.

Click on to proceed.

Make any changes necessary in here, i.e. if you need to dial a 9 for an outside line.

Modem Speakers

If your modem has a speaker, take note of the sound the modem makes when dialing. After the dialing tones, you should get about 15-20 seconds of handshaking, which sounds like a fax machines transmissions. i.e. a series of high pitch screeching.

Check your modem manual to find out if your modem has a speaker, and also how to enable it.
If the handshaking goes on for longer than half a minute, the modem is not handshaking properly.

Check that you have the correct modem drivers installed, see the section on modems to see how to do this. Also check the phone line, see the section on checking your line.
