'OSNAP Command

Sets running Object Snap modes

Object Snap toolbar:
Tools menu: Object Snap Settings
Command line: osnap

The Osnap Settings dialog box is displayed.

If you enter -osnap at the Command prompt, it displays options on the command line.

Osnap Settings Dialog Box

Running Osnap Tab

Sets running object snap modes and changes the aperture box size.

With running object snap modes, also called Osnap modes, you can specify a snap point at an exact location on an object. The mode determines the location. Running object snap modes can be turned on and off with the Osnap button on the status bar without losing your settings. You can use the TAB key to cycle through available snap settings. Object snap settings are stored with the drawing.

Select Settings

Specifies the running object snap modes. Select one or more options.

Endpoint

Snaps to the closest endpoint of an arc, elliptical arc, line, polyline segment, or ray.

Midpoint

Snaps to the midpoint of an arc, ellipse, elliptical arc, line, polyline segment, spline, or xline.

Center

Snaps to the center of an arc, circle, ellipse, or elliptical arc.

Node

Snaps to a point object.

Quadrant

Snaps to a quadrant point of an arc, circle, ellipse, or elliptical arc.

Intersection

Snaps to the intersection of an arc, circle, ellipse, elliptical arc, line, polyline, ray, spline, or xline.

Extended Intersection snaps to the imaginary intersection of two objects that would intersect if the objects were extended along their natural paths. Extended Intersection is automatically enabled when you select the Intersection object snap mode.

Insertion

Snaps to the insertion point of an attribute, a block, or text.

Perpendicular

Snaps to a point perpendicular to an arc, circle, ellipse, elliptical arc, line, polyline, ray, spline, or xline. Deferred perpendicular snap mode is automatically enabled when the object you are drawing requires more than one perpendicular snap point to be completed. You can use a line, arc, circle, pline, ray, xline, as an object from which to draw a perpendicular line. Deferred perpendicular can be used to draw perpendicular lines between such objects. When the aperture box passes over a deferred perpendicular snap point, a Snaptip and marker are displayed.

Tangent

Snaps to the tangent of an arc, circle, ellipse, or elliptical arc. The deferred tangent snap mode is automatically enabled when the object you are drawing requires more than one tangent snap point to be completed. For example, you can use deferred tangent to draw a line that is tangent to two arcs, pline arcs, or circles. When the aperture box passes over a deferred tangent snap point, a marker and Snaptip are displayed.

If you use the From option in conjunction with the Tangent snap mode to draw objects other than lines from arcs or circles, the first point drawn will be tangent to the arc or circle in relation to the last point selected in the drawing area.

Nearest

Snaps to the nearest point on an arc, circle, ellipse, elliptical arc, line, point, polyline, spline, or xline.

Clear All

Turns off all object snap modes.

When more than one option is selected, AutoCAD LT applies the selected snap modes to return a point closest to the center of the aperture box.

Aperture Size

Specifies the size of the aperture box. The maximum size is 20 pixels using the Running Object Snap dialog box. (APERTURE can increase the aperture box to 50 pixels.) The slider bar moves between Min and Max. The sample aperture box changes to show the new size.

The aperture size setting is stored in the registry, and will stay in effect until you specify another size.

AutoSnap Tab (OSNAP)

Specifies changes to the AutoSnap settings. When you are using any running object snaps, AutoSnap displays a marker and a Snaptip when you move your aperture box over a snap point. AutoSnap settings are saved in the registry.

When the aperture box is on an object, you can press the TAB key to cycle through all the snap points available for that object.

Marker

Turns the marker on or off. The marker is a geometric shape that is displayed when your aperture box moves over a snap point.

Magnet

Turns the magnet on or off. The magnet locks your aperture box onto the snap point.

SnapTip

Turns the Snaptip on or off. The Snaptip is a tooltip-like flag that describes the name of the snap location.

Display Aperture Box

Turns the aperture box on or off. The aperture box is displayed in the center of the crosshairs when you snap to an object. This option is available only when Marker, Magnet, or Snaptip is selected.

Marker Size

Controls the size of the marker. Slide the bar to the right to increase the size of the marker or left to decrease the size of the marker.

Marker Color

Shows the current color of the marker. Click the down arrow to change the marker's color.

Image Tile

Shows the current size of the marker.

-OSNAP (Command Line)

If you enter -osnap at the Command prompt, it displays options on the command line.

Object snap modes: Enter a name list, enter none or off, or press ENTER

Specify one or more object snap modes by entering the first three characters of the name. If you enter more than one name, separate the names with commas.

ENDpoint

Snaps to the closest endpoint of an arc, elliptical arc, line, polyline segment, or ray.

MIDpoint

Snaps to the midpoint of an arc, ellipse, elliptical arc, line, polyline segment, spline, or xline.

INTersection

Snaps to the intersection of an arc, circle, ellipse, elliptical arc, line, polyline, ray, spline, or xline.

CENter

Snaps to the center of an arc, circle, ellipse, or elliptical arc.

NODe

Snaps to a point object.

QUAdrant

Snaps to a quadrant point of an arc, circle, ellipse, or elliptical arc.

INSertion

Snaps to the insertion point of an attribute, a block, or text.

PERpendicular

Snaps to a point perpendicular to an arc, circle, ellipse, elliptical arc, line, polyline, ray, spline, or xline.

TANgent

Snaps to the tangent of an arc, circle, ellipse, or elliptical arc.

NEArest

Snaps to the nearest point on an arc, circle, ellipse, elliptical arc, line, point, polyline, spline, or xline.

NONe

Turns off object snap mode.
