Foreign students in Japan

There are currently 95,550 foreign students studying in Japan. To date, about 55,000 students have come from some 145 countries or regions around the world to study in Japan under the Japanese Government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Scholarship Program established in 1954. About 9,000 foreign students are currently studying in Japan as Japanese Government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Scholarship students (all figures above are as of May 1, 2002).
