Workshop  |  XML (Extensible Markup Language)

xsl:attribute Element

Creates an attribute node and attaches it to the output element.

Syntax

<xsl:attribute
    name="attribute-name" >

Attributes

name
Attribute name.

Element Information

Number of occurrences Unlimited
Parent elements xsl:copy, xsl:element, xsl:for-each, xsl:if, xsl:otherwise, xsl:template, xsl:when
Child elements xsl:apply-templates, xsl:choose, xsl:copy, xsl:entity-ref, xsl:eval, xsl:for-each, xsl:if, xsl:node-name, xsl:value-of
Requires closing tag Yes. XSL is an XML grammar and, like all XML grammars, all tags must have closing tags to satisfy the definition of well-formed.

Remarks

The contents of this element specify its value.

Attributes can be added or modified during transformation by placing the xsl:attribute element within elements that generate output, such as the xsl:copy element.

If the name attribute and value are not specified, the name and value of the current node are used. This facilitates passing attributes through without changes from the XML source document to the output document.

Example

This example copies the "myElement" element and all its attributes (but not its content).

<xsl:template match="myElement">
  <xsl:copy>
    <xsl:for-each match="@*">
      <xsl:attribute />
    <xsl:for-each/>
  </xsl:copy>
</xsl:template>
