I Speak, therefore
I am by Hatim Kantawalla
Throw away the keyboards, the mouse
and all the other input devices…did anybody say voice recognition
has finally come of age!
The idea that you could speak to your computer never really caught
on. Probably because voice recognition demanded high system requirements,
long hours spent on training and the fact that the resultant effort
did not actually translate into great accuracy.
But the latest versions and updates to the popular brands of voice
recognition software claim to fulfill the fantasy of relaxing in
an easy chair, dictating into a microphone and reeling off voice
commands to the computer. You can actually surf the Web, send e-mail
and perform a host of other mundane tasks such as saving files,
copying and deleting stuff all through simple voice commands.
More importantly, voice and continuous speech recognition is playing
a major part in helping people with disabilities and also in the
field of medical transcripts.
The old problems of higher system requirements still remain, but
with higher accuracy and added features for surfing the Net, there's
no real reason why voice recognition software will not become common
place.
