The Documentation and Systems Department of the Benaki Museum was established in 1991 with the aim of introducing, developing and supporting information technology within the Museum.
 

The activities of the Documentation and Systems Department include:

  • The computerized documentation and management of the Museum's collections through the development and support of computer applications.
  • Presentation of the Museum's collections and publicization of Greek culture in general through the development of multimedia applications including CD-Roms, information kiosks and websites.
  • Technical support of the computer systems in the Museum.
  • Encouraging the promotion and dissemination of mainstream in information technology in the cultural sphere through the organisation of seminars and the publication of the information bulletin "MITOS'.
  • Co-ordinating the compilation of Greek prototypes for documenting museum objects.
  • Developing a prototype thesaurus for the documentation of cultural information about museum objects.
  • Cooperating with other museums in creating a network of cultural information, to ensure the adoption of uniform standards, and to facilitate joint action.
