FORMER APPLICATIONS

Since its establishment, the Documentation and Systems Department has kept abreast of advances in the areas of information technology and communications, and developed and implemented several types of applications.

Examples include:

  • Producing a prototype optical disk CDI entitled "The Sacred Way", about the Sanctuary of Demeter at Eleusis and the Eleusinian Mysteries (1992). This was the first time an educational optical disk concerning an ancient Greek topic was produced in Greece, and also one of the earliest attempts to depict an ancient temple using premature virtual reality. The aim of the project was to test the application as a teaching tool. The production of the “The Sacred Way” formed part of the European programme COMMETT-2, which also involved the Institute of Archaeology of Oxford University, the British companies NewMedia and Mechanical Intelligence UK, and the Greek companies I-TEL, Mneme, and PETA Ltd.

  • Localization and implementation of CDS-ISIS, a Canadian computerized documentation system for museums. In 1991 this system was used for cataloguing the Benaki Museum's library and its collection of Paintings, Prints and Drawings.
