Escape Velocity: Override 1.0
Escape Velocity:
Override is the follow-up to the cult game Escape Velocity, although old hands may not
notice many differences initially. The game is still a richly complex action/strategy
game, starting on a small commercial vessel of which you are the captain in the midst of a
galaxy in mayhem. Trading goods, running supply missions and ferrying passengers from
system to system are still the bread-and-butter money earners, but as old EV gamers know,
this is just the surface. Sure, trading is a steady way to gain income, but at 5,000
credits a mission, how are you ever going to afford the 1.5 million credit ship you've
been looking at? In EV the underbelly of the game was all there. Secretive company representatives offered high-paid courier work, or you could choose life as a privateer. The ideologically inclined could work their way in with one of the governments fighting for control of various systems, but it was possible to play the game for hours without getting any interesting missions. EV: Override fixes that problem. From the first minute the player is offered paths into the conspiracies and subplots of the galaxy — and anything the player does influences the events which steadily unfold. The galaxy is also around five times larger, with new inhabited worlds, governments and technologies to tinker with. The EV engine has been updated, with new graphics and sound along with at least 250 new missions. The plug-in system has also been advanced, but isn't backward-compatible with EV plug-ins. So no more battling the Empire single-handed, or at least until someone gets bored with the world of EV: Override. A worthy successor to EV, EV: Override is destined to cause many a sleepless night. And the best part is it runs without a hitch on my old 040 PowerBook. |

Mars Rising 1.0.1 | |||||
One of the
newest games out of the distinguished Ambrosia stable, Mars Rising is almost a
retrospective of what gaming used to be. Remember the old games like 1942 and Raiden? Mars
Rising is another top-view flight game set on the surface of Mars during a colonial
uprising. Join the oppressors, and fly an experimental Vac-Tec 'Peace Enforcement' fighter
against the tanks, fighters and turrets of the Martian Freedom Fighters. Hint: hit
everything in sight to ensure weapons and shields upgrades float out, and holding down on
fire sets the lasers to power-up for a big blast. The bombs are pretty hard to get used
to, but they add an extra skill dimension to the game which was lacking in the old
vertical-scrolling games on platforms like the Amiga. Mars Rising requires a PowerPC, but unfortunately is only 256 colours. It feels a lot like an arcade or console game, and gets pretty addictive. Make sure to register — the downloadable shareware version only has the first four levels activated, and requires a code to unlock to the full 28 levels of mayhem. |

Jetsons' Space Race | |||||
Jetsons' Space Race is a strangely addictive little game built with Director. Using just the arrow keys, it involves piloting the Jetsons' car through traffic to get George to work on time. The catch is that the rest of the family has to be dropped off first. It is a side-scrolling animated game that can cause more stress in an attempt to beat an earlier time than any grown adult would be prepared to admit. This fun little game is easy to play and harmless enough for kids of any age.

Snood 2.0 | |||||
Snood is a
bizarre puzzle game involving the firing of 'Snoods' at rows of the same, balanced above
the onscreen representation of the player. Snoods aren't nice, but get three touching, and
they disappear. The problem is that after a few shots, shown in a bar on the right-hand
side of the screen, the Snood wall drops down towards the player one level, killing them
when it reaches the bottom. Sounds like you are going to hate it, right? At first look, Snood looks boring and stupid. Give it a try. It has a cult following on the Internet, with Snood level packs and editors freely available. Or maybe don't try it. Snood is the nicotine of puzzle games. |

Foreign Fruit Invaders 1.0
Foreign Fruit
Invaders may not be the most exciting game ever made, but in a very strange way, it is one
of the cutest. Despite the title, there doesn't seem to be anything xenophobic about this
Space Invaders-like shoot-'em-up game. Controlling the shooter with the mouse is a little tricky, but makes the gameplay more relaxing than bashing away at a keyboard. The goal is to shoot the flying pumpkins, which throw apple-cores. Bombs in the form of green apples are thrown, and extra lives are gained by shooting and then catching a tray carrying a jug of beer. Not bad. |
