Installing Software for Windows Version 3.11

Installing Windows Version 3.11 Software

This section describes the installation procedures for Windows Version 3.11 and its device drivers for your ThinkPad computer.
Important
Before reinstalling the operating system and device drivers, you need to create all installation diskettes using the Diskette Factory program (a diskette backup program that is preloaded on your computer).

Installing Microsoft Windows Version 3.11

(Ref #102.)  

Windows Version 3.11 operates in a DOS environment. Install the following before installing Windows:


Important
During installation, do the following for Windows to operate correctly:

  • When the Windows Setup program asks you to select either Express Setup or Custom Setup, select C for Custom Setup.

  • Install Windows Version 3.11 with the default VGA display driver that came with Windows. After you complete the installation of Windows, install the ThinkPad display driver.

Note:
If you have installed OS/2, the path to install Windows may have changed to C:\OS2\MDOS\WINOS2 (C is the drive on which you installed OS/2). If so, change the path to:

     C:\WINDOWS

Do the following to install Windows Version 3.11 with Advanced Power Management (APM):

    (Ref #103.)   (Ref #104.)

  1. Install Windows Version 3.11 with the APM option:

    1. Start the installation as specified in the Windows manual.

    2. When the Windows Setup program asks you to select Express Setup or Custom Setup, type C for Custom Setup.

    3. Continue installing Windows Version 3.11 until the following screen appears:

    4.  Using the Up Arrow (^), highlight MS-DOS System and press Enter.

    5. Select MS-DOS System with APM from the list and press Enter.

      Verify that Computer has changed to MS-DOS System with APM. If the item has not changed, return to step d.

  2. Make sure the Display choice is set to VGA. (Do not change this choice.)

  3. When you have completed the installation of Windows, edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that the computer will use the correct mouse driver:

    Note:
    When Windows Version 3.11 is installed, the computer is automatically configured to use the MOUSE.COM driver provided by Windows Version 3.11. However, for correct operation, your computer must use the MOUSE.COM driver that came with DOS.

    1. At the DOS command prompt (usually C:\>), type
      E \AUTOEXEC.BAT and press Enter.

    2. Find the line: C:\WINDOWS\MOUSE.COM /Y

    3. Change it to: C:\DOS\MOUSE.COM /Y

    4. Find the line that includes SHARE.EXE and delete that line.

    5. Save the file and restart the computer.

  4. After installing Windows, you should check the creation date of the following drivers in the DOS subdirectory and the Windows subdirectory: Then use the newest program between the one for DOS and the one for Windows for each drivers.

    You can easily use the newer one by changing the subdirectory name in the CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT as follows:

         C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE
                       V
         C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE
    

When you start Windows from the DOS prompt, do not close the LCD while the program is loading; if you do, the computer will stop running.

Installing the ThinkPad Features Program for Windows Version 3.11

Note:
When installing an operating system, you need to install the ThinkPad Features program.

If you are going to use Windows, install the ThinkPad Features program for DOS first (see "Installing the ThinkPad Features Program for DOS"); then do the following to install the ThinkPad Features program for Windows Version 3.11:

  1. Start Windows.

  2. Select File from the Program Manager window; then select Run... from the pull-down menu.

  3. Insert the Utility Diskette for Windows into the diskette drive; then type A:\INSTALLW and press Enter.

  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.

    Default choices are already highlighted at the Installation Options screen.

Installing the PC Card Support Software for Windows Version 3.11

(Ref #106.)

Note:
The files on the diskette are in a compressed format. The installation program decompresses the files that are copied to the destination drive.

To use PC Cards in Windows Version 3.11, install the CardWizard **  software:    

  1. Insert the diskette containing the CardWizard software into the diskette drive.

  2. Start Windows.

  3. From Windows Program Manager, select File from the pull-down menu and click on Run.

  4. Type a:\setup in the Run dialog box that appears on the screen.

  5. Click on OK.

  6. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Installing the Audio Support Software for Windows Version 3.11

     

To install the audio support software:

  1. Start Windows.

  2. Select File... from the Program Manager window; then select Run... from the pull-down menu.

  3. Insert the Audio Features Diskette for Windows 3.11 into the diskette drive of your computer; then type A:\SETUP and press Enter.

  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

The MIDI serial port connector is available when the computer is attached to the ThinkPad 380 or 385 port replicator.
The MIDI port capability is disabled as a default, so you need to enable the function in the ThinkPad Features program.
You need to install MPU401 Support Software from the Windows 3.1 installation disk. Select and install the Roland MPU401 device driver in the control panel.

Installing the Infrared Device Driver for Windows Version 3.11

The infrared device driver for Windows 3.11 is included in the application TranXit for Windows.

There are two types of infrared device drivers for Windows 3.11:

The two drivers cannot work together, so you must install only the one that you use.

The former is included in TranXit for Windows, and is installed when you install the application. You need not install it separately. The latter is included in the Infrared Features Diskette II, and is installed as an NDIS2-compliant network adapter driver or as an ODI-compliant network adapter driver when you install the respective networking software. Refer to the respective networking software publication for installation procedures. The README file on the Infrared Features Diskette II also contains additional information.

Installing the ThinkPad Display Device Driver for Windows Version 3.11

     

Note:
When installing an operating system, you need to install the ThinkPad display driver.

Note:
You can change the display resolution type by using the ThinkPad Features program after completing the installation of the ThinkPad Features program for Windows.

Do the following to install the ThinkPad display device driver for Windows Version 3.11 so that you can get a correct display setting and better performance:

  1. Start DOS; then go to the WINDOWS subdirectory.

  2. Type SETUP to start the Windows setup program.

  3.  Using the Up Arrow (^), highlight Display and press Enter.

  4. Select Other (Requires disk...) from the list.

  5. Insert the Video Features Diskette for Windows into the diskette drive; then type A: and press Enter.

  6. Select your desired resolution from the menu and press Enter.

    Verify that Display has changed to your desired resolution type (an example is shown in the following screen). If the item has not changed, return to step 3.

  7. Press Enter to continue the installation.

  8. After the installation is complete, remove any diskette from the diskette drive and restart the computer.
