Copying music to your portable device

Use the Portable Device feature to copy audio files from Media Library to your portable device or storage card. You can also copy licensed files that you downloaded from the Internet or files that you copied from CDs to your portable device. You must add files to Media Library before you can use Windows Media Player to copy them to your portable device.

Note   Before using Windows Media Player to copy files to your portable device, you should give each file a unique name or title instead of using generic names such as Track 1 or Track 2. This will prevent existing files with the same names from being overwritten on your portable device. You can edit any file information by right-clicking the file name, and then clicking Edit. For more information about how to edit file information, see Related topics.

To copy files to your portable device

  1. Click Portable Device, and then in the Music to Copy list, click the files that you want to copy.

Note   The list of items that you can choose from are organized by your playlists. Use the check mark icon checkbox at the top of the list to select all items or clear all items in the Music to Copy dialog box. This is helpful if you only want a few items from a large list.

  2. Clear any check boxes for tracks you do not want to copy, and then click Copy Music.

All tracks in the list that are selected are copied to the portable device if space is available on the portable device.

See the legend on the lower right edge of the display to view the percentage of free space on your portable device or storage card and an estimate of the percentage of disk space required for the files that you want to copy to the device. If 100 percent of the space on the portable device is used, none of the selected files are copied.

  3. Repeat steps 1-2 for any other playlist or file you want to copy to your portable device.

Note   If you are using Microsoft Windows Media Player for Pocket PC or Microsoft Windows Media Player for Palm-size PC on your portable device, you can double-click tracks in Music on device to begin playback on your portable device.
