Indexing Newsgroups with Microsoft Index Server

Users can use Microsoft® Index Server to search for newsgroup articles that contain specified text strings. Index Server periodically updates the catalog that users search using a custom Web page.

For more information on Index Server concepts, see the Index Server online documentation.

To enable indexing in Microsoft NNTP Service:
  1. In either Internet Service Manager or Internet Service Manager (HTML), select the Home Directory property sheet.
  2. Select the Index news content check box.
  3. If you have newsgroups located in one or more virtual directories, select the appropriate virtual directory. Then from the Action menu, choose Properties.
  4. In the Virtual Directory property sheet, select the Index news content check box.
  5. Repeat this process for each virtual directory.

Users issue search requests to Index Server through a custom Web page. Index Server includes a sample Web page for searching newsgroups to show you how to write your own Web page for searching the newsgroups on your news site.

To view the sample Index Server Web page:
  1. From the Start menu, choose Programs and then Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, Microsoft Index Server, and Index Server Sample Query Form.
  2. In the left pane, select NNTP Search Sample.
