Windows NT Events for Microsoft SMTP Service

Microsoft SMTP Service generates events in Event Viewer so that you can verify that Microsoft SMTP Service is performing correctly. Event Viewer tracks¾in order of increasing seriousness¾informational, warning, and error events. The logs in Event Viewer provide an audit record of all Windows NT services and of processes such as logon times and connection times.

Logging begins automatically in three separate logs whenever Windows NT is started: System, Security, and Application. For each type of log, you can filter the events to be viewed, designate the number of entries to view, decide how long to save entries, and decide whether to automatically overwrite existing events when the log becomes full. Events specific to the Microsoft SMTP Service are recorded in the Application log. The source for all SMTP events will read SMTPSVC.

Note  In Event Viewer, from the Log menu, choose Log Settings to set event logs to overwrite. If the Event Log fills with event messages, it might slow Microsoft SMTP Service.

A description of each event that can be logged in Event Viewer is provided under List of Microsoft SMTP Service Events, along with a description of appropriate user actions. (For more information about Event Viewer, see the Windows NT Server documentation.)
