MSDE for Visual Studio 6.0 General FAQ

Q: What is MSDE (Microsoft Data Engine?)
A: MSDE is the Microsoft Data Engine, a fully SQL Server-compatible data engine for building desktop and shared solutions that provides the easiest migration path to SQL Server 7.0. Solutions built with MSDE can be migrated to full SQL Server 7.0 without requiring a change in a single line of code.

MSDE is available with Office 2000 Premium and Developer editions (as an Access 2000 ôData Projectö) and is also available to licensed users of Visual Studio 6.0 Professional and Enterprise edition tools. Developers that build desktop and shared solutions with either MSDE for Visual Studio 6.0 or Office 2000 Developer can distribute these solutions to end-users royalty free. In addition, MSDE allows developers to offer the enterprise-class reliability of SQL Server including features such as merge replication, point-in-time recovery and dynamic backup-and-restore. MSDE is tuned to provide optimal performance at up to 5 concurrent users and supports up to 2 gigabytes of data.

Q: Why would a developer want to distribute a solution on MSDE?
A: MSDE offers Visual Studio developers new opportunities to build desktop and shared solutions that are freely distributable, yet can be easily migrated SQL Server 7.0 technology if the customer or end-user want to scale the solution up to thousands of users or terabytes of data.

For example:

  • Developers can offer an introductory or trial edition of their full product that ordinarily ships with SQL Server 7.0.
  • Developers can point to a full range of scalability in their products, where no upgrade or conversion is required if the customer wants to scale the application to serve the entire enterprise.
  • Corporate developers can fully leverage their investment in software development, assuring that applications initially intended to serve the desktop or a small department can be leveraged across the entire enterprise if needed, without requiring a change to single line of code.

Q: Where can I get MSDE for Visual Studio 6.0?
A: MSDE for Visual Studio 6.0 is available to licensed customers of Visual Studio 6.0 Professional and Enterprise edition tools as a download and can also be ordered on CD (for a minimal shipping and handling fee).

MSDN™ Universal and Select customers will also receive MSDE automatically in the an upcoming shipment.

Q: What is included with MSDE for Visual Studio 6.0?
A: MSDE for Visual Studio 6.0 includes:

  • The redistributable MSDE data engine, in CAB file format
  • SQL Server 7.0 Developer Edition, a full edition of SQL Server 7.0 licensed to Visual Studio 6.0 developers for the use of building and testing applications.
  • Windows NT Service Pack 4, required for MSDE applications on Windows NT (MSDE also runs on Windows 95 and Windows 98).

Each of these components can be downloaded, with the exception of the SQL Server 7.0 Developer edition, which is provided on the CDs that can be ordered from this same site.

Q: To whom is MSDE for Visual Studio 6.0 available?
A: MSDE for Visual Studio 6.0 will be available to licensed customers of any Visual Studio 6.0 edition or any Professional or Enterprise edition of any Visual Studio 6.0 language tool. This includes:

  • Visual StudioÖ 6.0, Professional and Enterprise edition
  • Visual Basic« 6.0, Professional and Enterprise edition
  • Visual C++ « 6.0, Professional and Enterprise edition
  • Visual InterDevÖ 6.0 Professional edition
  • Visual J++Ö 6.0 Professional edition
  • Visual FoxProÖ 6.0 Professional edition

Q: What is SQL Server 7.0 Developer edition?
A: MSDE is a data engine and does not have its own user interface for database design. Therefore, Microsoft includes a copy of SQL Server 7.0 Developer edition for creating and designing MSDE databases using the SQL Server 7.0 Enterprise Manager. SQL Server 7.0 Developer edition, while being a full copy of the SQL Server 7.0 product, is licensed only for the individual use of the Visual Studio 6.0 developer to build and test solutions built on MSDE (as subject to the terms and conditions of the attached end user license agreement). If preferred, developers can also create MSDE databases via the Access 2000 User Interface or via the Visual Studio development environment. The SQL Server 7.0 Developer edition simply provides the most comprehensive design-time environment for applications to be built on MSDE.

Q: What do developers need to know to install and utilize MSDE?
A: A comprehensive guide for Visual Studio developers that wish to build MSDE solutions is the MSDE for Visual Studio 6.0 Technical FAQ.
