Touch and teddy bears for the elderly

Mrs Burnes

Something cuddly, preferably teddy bears, should be given to the very elderly patients who revert to childlike needs in geriatric wards and old people's homes.

My aunt at 97, who was fortunate enough to be in a private home with all the comforts, had her teddy bear (purchased when she was admitted) always on her lap. Another elderly relative, who had been in a geriatric ward for many years, only showed any recognition or delight when her hand was held. Nurses have so little time to hold hands; something soft and cuddly would begin to fill the gap. Perhaps the parliamentary Lords and Commons Bear Den, which collects bears for children in hospital, could extend the good work.

I am sure that you are also aware of the success of volunteers, taking their dogs to visit old people's homes. 'Something to touch' has proved a great success.
