My aunt at 97, who was fortunate enough to be in a private home with all the comforts, had her teddy bear (purchased when she was admitted) always on her lap. Another elderly relative, who had been in a geriatric ward for many years, only showed any recognition or delight when her hand was held. Nurses have so little time to hold hands; something soft and cuddly would begin to fill the gap. Perhaps the parliamentary Lords and Commons Bear Den, which collects bears for children in hospital, could extend the good work.
I am sure that you are also aware of the success of volunteers, taking their dogs to visit old people's homes. 'Something to touch' has proved a great success.
