The Forest Peoples' Fund

The Forest Peoples' Fund was set up by the Gaia Foundation to fund and support projects initiated by the Forest People themselves, particularly the Indians in the Amazon rainforest.

'Global Forest Peoples' Pledge, aimed at collecting pledges of support and money from five million people'

In 1989, the Fund, coordinated by Tanya Schwarz and others, contributed to funding and publicising the first Gathering of Amazonian Indian tribes at Altamira and helped the Union of Indian Nations in Sao Paulo both to develop its communication systems (providing fax machines and so on), and also to launch its Global Forest Peoples' Pledge, aimed at collecting pledges of support and money from five million people around the word. This money will be channelled directly to the Forest People, for help in their determination to protect their rainforest homes.
