Here is an idea which I feel might be of use in Britain; why do we not have pillar boxes with an opening on the roadside, as well as facing the pavement? That way, motorists could drive up and post letters without having to park and leave their cars. I suppose it would be argued that it would present a danger to children, who may be tempted to post letters standing in the road, but children can be taught road safety, and have sense.
(I was once told that such pillar-boxes are in operation in Germany.)
