Recyclable telephone directories

Adapted extract from Warmer Bulletin (May '95; free subs. from The World Resources Foundation, Bridge House, High St, Tonbridge, Kent TN9 1NP, tel 01732 368333; fax 01732 368337).

Research undertaken into the recycling of telephone directories has established that some modern paper mills are able to process old directories without problems, despite a widely held belief that the glue - necessarily strong to meet its function - constitutes a serious contaminant. (However, directories which use distinctive yellow pages rather than white ones do still create problems in newsprint mills, although the yellow dye is acceptable in mills which manufacture packaging materials.)
