Based on an item in National Enquirer (USA; Dec. 1st '92) monitored for the Institute by Roger Knights; the item there in turn derived from a story in The Wall Street Journal.

'They usually end up squeezing so tight I think my hand's going to come off at the wrist'

Dr Stephen Turner, an ophthalmologist in San Leandro, California, has three volunteers who hold the hands of patients during eye surgery - thus lowering a patient's blood pressure and heart rates, according to Dr Turner. 'Some people, particulans no longer dominate life, though we've done nothing et Pickford, aged 83, one of the volunteer hand-holders, 'but they usually end up squeezing so tight I think my hand's going to come off at the wrist.'
