Some of the monsters in Beyond Zork are defeated by puzzle-solving. Usually the only way past those encounters is to solve the puzzle.
The rest are straight fighting. However, if you can't get past a creature by fighting (and you can't afford better armor) you can use magic items to get rid of it.
