Is there any other way around xxx other than fighting?

Some of the monsters in Beyond Zork are defeated by puzzle-solving.  Usually
the only way past those encounters is to solve the puzzle.

Hint 2 of 4:

The rest are straight fighting.  However, if you can't get past a creature by
fighting (and you can't afford better armor) you can use magic items to get
rid of it.

Hint 3 of 4:

For example, the Wand (Staff/Cane/etc....) of Annilihation can be used to
remove almost any enemy from your path.
