Java

This is a new page under construction which will contain info on Java and in particular on Acorn's RisCafe Java port.

RisCafe can now be upgraded to version 0.74 from either version 0.72 which comes on the RisCafe CD or from the earlier Web upgrade of version 0.73.

If you are using the Acorn !Browse then clicking Menu on the Taskbar Icon - then Help - will bring up the 'Upgrade' page.

If you live in England you may like to know that the 'County Bookshops' chain of discount book stores now carry quite a number of Java and Javascript books as well as general Web based books. As an example 'Just Java' and 'Instant Java' are available for 7UKPs and each comes with a CD. Also available are the 'Special Edition' volumes of the 'Complete Java' and 'Complete JavaScript' at about 10UKPs. Although not the latest editions they cover Java up to version 1.1 and are priced at less than a third of their original price. In all I think there are about twelve Java and Web related books on offer.

To start this page off here is one very useful Web site to visit:-

java.sun.com

for the up-to-date Online copy of the Java Tutorial.

This is the Second Edition of The Java Tutorial by Mary Campione and Kathy Walrath.

The download Zip file is over 6Mbs so try at the weekend. Also because of the long filenames and at least one directory with more than 77 files in it you will need some filing system like raFS by Richard Atterer into which to unpack the manual. raFS is Freeware. I'm using version 1.22 dated 22 Feb 98. A copy was on the April cover disc (Disc 1) of Acorn User.

Another good place to start looking for Java applets and info is the Java Boutique.
