More Information

The Clean and Zip Utility enables you to remove unwanted files after scanning a particular drive. Once you have selected a drive and pressed the Read button, you will be given a detailed report of every file on that drive. If you then press the Filters button you will be given a series of options, that enable you to make the list of files more manageable. This includes sorting files by extension, by date, by size. Each of these options can be customised to make the search more complex and you can also search for all duplicate files. Once you have identified the files you are looking for you can not only delete them, but also Zip them. This compresses the files giving you more space, but still retains them in an archive folder, should you require them at a later date.

The Tune Up Utility consolidates Windows memory fragments to increase the size of the largest memory block available. If you press the button marked Tune Up within WINCheckIt, then it performs the consolidation automatically and it can be unclear what has actually been done. For a more detailed view access Tune Up from the Programs Menu and you will be shown a graph detailing the largest memory block, system resources available and free memory below 1Mb. If you then select Tune Up, you should see the effect that this utility has.

The Uninstall Utility lists your current program groups and their respective items and enables you to remove programs more comprehensively than by manual methods. Once you have selected a program that you are interested in removing from your hard drive press the Uninstall button. This will give you a detailed list of each file that WINCheckIt believes to be associated with the program. You can then highlight the files that you want to get rid of.

WINCheckIt itself can provide you with detailed information about your system. It can also perform benchmark tests and compare them to other system specs, which it has built in, or you can compare with previous tests you have run on your machine. To gather information about your system, press the Collect icon on the toolbar and then press Custom. This enables you to control what data is collected, varying from information about the I/O ports, to XMS and EMS memory. If any of the tests that are performed fail, then you can come back to this options box and disable a particular item, so that the failure will not prevent a record of other information being gathered. On top of all the tests and reports that can be carried out to help you identify any problems with your PC, there are additional features such as the Software Shopper. This has a comprehensive list of software packages and will identify whether they will run on your system, highlighting any possible problems. There is also a Reference Library, which gives you detailed information on a host of topics. It will give you instructions and advice on partitioning your hard drive and will also tell you how to go about fitting a video card.

With all this information available about your PC and all the advice on making changes and rectifying problems, this is an ideal package for all those amongst you who are constantly striving to get every ounce of performance out of your PC.
