I've lowlevel formatted quite alot, I'm still here. :-)

I don't know about IDE, too archiac for me to bother without having a good
reason.

I use SCSI exclusively, and whenever I lowlevel I typically end up with a
drive with less problems.

For SCSI, lowlevel formatting is typically instructing the drive to check
itself for errors and map them to alternate reserved blocks.

There seems to be another form of lowlevel formatting that is typically only
done at the factory that is essentially a lowlevel formatting.

Why does formatting harm a disk, why does replacing bad blocks with good ones
cause apocalyptic results?
