I just tried with my boot partition, that doesn't happen here. Memory usage
jumps a bit up and down while switching, but in the end both modes require
about the same amount of memory (its only a few files so it might change
with bigger directories, but I don't use this option at all).

Can't verify this, never used it with 3.1, neither do I now with 3.5 :)
