Millwall and Everton receive byes.
In the match of round 1, Julie Hewitt put Liverpool ahead in the 41st minute. Doncaster equalised with a penalty by Michelle Jackson just a minute later. The Liverpool heroine was 17 year-old keeper Rachael Brown, who made 3 great saves during the penalty shoot-out.

The holders, Millwall Lionesses were beaten by a late goal by Natasha Daly, who scored from close range against her England team-mate, Pauline Cope. Katie Chapman had put the south London side 1-0 up, with a superb 25 metre shot, but Marieanne Spacey equalised with an even more powerful shot into the same corner. The Merseyside 'giants' showed their extra class against North and South opponents, with 8 and 7 goals respectively. Tranmere Rovers, the other team from across the Mersey, needed penalties to beat Blyth and will not be looking forward to the short trip in the quarter-finals. The struggles of Wembley continue, another match without a goal. Ilkeston Town, who have won all their previous League and Cup games, were only just beaten by Croydon, a top 3 club.

FINAL, March 23, 1998
ArsenalCroydon-

In the third round match in South London, a couple of goals by player/manager Debbie Bampton put Croydon into the semi-finals, after Cathy Davies had given Liverpool the lead in the first half, with a spectacular lofted cross shot from over 30 metres.

In the semi-finals, most of the drama was in Guisley, West Yorkshire where National Division newcomers, Bradford City, pushed the mighty 'gunners' all the way. Arsenal had goalkeeper Sarah Reed sent-off for a debatable 'professional foul' and England team-mate, Tina Mapes had to go in goal for some of the second half, extra-time and then the dreaded penalty shoot-out.

The other match in South London, Everton had several chances to take the lead in the first half. Karen Burke put a free header wide and Louise Cooper made a great one-handed save to deny the same player. A couple of minutes into the second half, on a bitterly cold and windy day, Kerry Davis tapped home a Hope Powell free kick for the Croydon lead. Half way through the second period, Kerry Davis flicked the ball into the net, following another cross by her England team-mate Hope Powell.

With both finalists being based in Greater London, the Final should be held in the capital for the third year in a row.

National Division, EVERTON are the English champions. Arsenal play Bradford, then Doncaster to decide 2nd place in the League.

ILKESTON win North Division, SOUTHAMPTON SAINTS win South Division.

WEMBLEY and BERKHAMSTED are relegated from National Division.

A series of regional play-offs will decide who replaces clubs relegated from the North & South Divisions.

April 26, 1998

With the weather and cup matches affecting proceedings, there have been minor changes in the race for the English League title.

Tranmere Rovers blunted the chances of the 'Belles' by taking a point at the Yorkshire club. Last season Rovers lost 5-0 there. Despite going back to the top, Doncaster can only obtain 43 points and this is unlikely to be enough to win the league.

Wembley have picked up a couple of more experienced players, but still could not find the net, as Millwall moved up a place.

Doncaster Belles and Everton open up the gap on the chasing two, with their two wins on Feb. 8th. The meeting of these two on March 15th will be crucial.

Liverpool move up a place after their win at the helpless Wembley.

While the England team were away in France, losing 3-2, and the other players were resting, Berkhamsted went north and picked up a precious win at Bradford. These two look as though they will be fighting it out for the second relegation place, with Wembley almost certainly going down to the South Division.

On 22nd February, Everton went back to the top with a comfortable 5-0 win over Berkhamsted, thanks to a hat-trick by Karen Burke. Bradford City scored a hat full, to help their chances of staying up, and recorded the highest total of the season in the National Division.

Tranmere Rovers are beginning to prove that they can get results against the top teams, making it difficult for Croydon to get the top spot again.

The 'big' game on March 15th went to the 'Belles' and gives a glimmer of hope to the chasing 3. Arsenal and Croydon have to play each other twice and Doncaster have to visit Arsenal. Everton have away matches at Millwall and Croydon, so it could be a very close finish.

Bradford and Tranmere upset the top 2 on April 5th, when the wet weather must have affected the playing surface in the north. At Berkhamsted, Croydon were 4-0 up, when the pitch was waterlogged and the game will have to be replayed. The double winners of 1996 face a similar number of games, 6 plus the cup final on May 4th, to achieve that feat. If they win every game, they will do it, but will have to have a better goal difference than Everton.

Arsenal could also get the 'double' by winning every match, in fact it would be the 'treble' as they are the League Cup holders. But Everton would have to lose one of their last 2 matches as well.

On Wednesday 8th April, Croydon took the lead against Arsenal in the 43rd minute, thanks to a stunning 25 metre shot by Sam Britton. But the worst result for either team was a draw, and so thats how it finished, 2-2. The Everton team will be delighted with this result.

The wet weather and the preparations for the England v Italy friendly international has meant that the league title is still waiting to be claimed by one of 4 teams. Croydon keep their hopes alive with a comfortable 6-1 win over Berkhamsted.

On Sunday 26th April, there were significant changes to the title race with the draw for Everton at Croydon knocking out two potential champions. With one match to go, Everton need one point to win the title. Arsenal with 2 games in hand, could still get top spot, but may require a +10 goal difference in the 3 matches if Everton slip up. Berkhamsted must win against Millwall to stay up, and hope Bradford lose their final match (at Arsenal).

An interesting 5 weeks lie ahead, as the FA have allowed the season to be extended to fit in the matches.

November 6, 1997
Good start for Croydon and Liverpool and new team, Berkhamsted. A hat-trick by Hope Powell helped Croydon to their big win over the newly promoted team from Yorkshire. Julie Hewitt scored twice for Liverpool in their win, where former St. Helens player Barbara Nodwell has taken over as the manager.

Looks like Bradford and Wembley may struggle this season. Arsenal have lost Kelly Smith (to Seton Hall Univ) and Joanne Broadhurst (to Croydon) while Everton have 2 England players from Liverpool (Karen Burke and Becky Easton). Liverpool have also lost the services of Jodie Handley, who has joined a US University.

Belles and Millwall have much the same players, winner came in 84th minute, direct from corner by Chantelle Woodhead.

It was a goal feast for leaders Doncaster, with prolific scorer, Karen Walker getting 5, Tracey Kilner 2 and one each for Gail Borman and Sarah Begg. All the other top sides won as well, except Berkhamsted.

Mandy Lowe, a former 'Belle' opened the scored for Liverpool in the 15th minute. Three late goals by Gillian Coultard (70), Michelle Jackson (78, pen) and Karen Walker (87), gave the Belles the points.

Great result for Croydon with Joanne Broadhurst (a former Belle) getting the winner in the 46th minute. Goals by Kim Jerray-Silver (10) Tina Mapes (recently moved from Croydon) (34) and Rachel Yankee (69) helped Arsenal beat Liverpool. Everton keep up with leaders, Karen Burke getting a couple and Maureen Marley the other goal. Millwall managed their first win with goals by Gemma Hunt, Pamela Bedzrah and Pru Buckley. Melanie Garside scored for Bradford. Kelly Shimmins scored a hat-trick for Tranmere Rovers in their win. Its getting desparate for Wembley already, with no points and goals.

An 88th minute penalty by Karen Burke gave Everton this vital win. Croydon move up to 4th with another away win, being helped by two new players, Ayala Liran and Julie Darby, signed from Wembley. Wembley suffer again, and former captain Siobhan Melia has left to join Whitehawk.

September 16, 1997

The famous Doncaster 'Belles' go to top of the league after 2 matches with the win at Tranmere.

The 'Gunners' move to joint 2nd with their win at Bradford, along with Everton and Liverpool.

New club, Berkhamsted will be delighted to also be in the top half. They beat Wembley at Hanwell FC (the cup runners-up, new ground) with 2 goals by Pernill Overbye, in the 68th and 83rd minutes. Both sides hit the wood-work, but Berkhamsted keeper, Tracy Perry made a great tip-over save just 2 minutes from time to keep a clean sheet.

Ilkeston Town are promoted to the National Division, a year after being relegated.

March 8, 1998

Although unlikely, Garswood Saints are the only team that can stop Ilkeston returning to the National Division next season.

Barry Town promoted via play-offs. Rushden was Town & County last season.

April 26, 1998

The fight to reach the top level between Southampton, Wimbledon and Brighton is over, SAINTS are champions and will play in the National division next season.

Last year it was Berkhamsted who got up, but I think they will be back next season, along with Wembley. Langford would then be switched to the North Division.

Rushden & Diamonds will be replaced by which ever team wins the play-off.
