Works

General Tips

To ensure the correct century is being used, enter and display years in four digits.

Works 4.5a - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Works 4.5 - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Works 4.0 - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Works (Macintosh) 4.0 (English)
Works 3.0 - 16-Bit Windows (English)

Works 4.5a - 32-Bit Windows

Recommendation: No action necessary.

Date handling: Works 4.5a and the Works Calendar interpret two-digit shortcuts from 00 to 29 to be in the 2000s, (e.g. 21 is 2021). Two-digit shortcuts from 30 to 99 are interpreted to be in the 1900s.

The Works 4.5a spreadsheet and database use a short date format with a four-digit year (mm/dd/yyyy), which is displayed when a date-formatted cell is selected or edited.

For more information: See the Works 4.5a Product Guide document.

Works 4.5 - 32-Bit Windows

Recommendation: Install the Year 2000 update for Microsoft Works. To request the update on CD-ROM call 888-673-8925 toll free.

Date handling: After the update, two-digit shortcuts from 00 to 29 are interpreted to be in the 2000s, (e.g. 21 is 2021). Two-digit shortcuts from 30 to 99 are interpreted to be in the 1900s.

For more information: See the Works 4.5 Product Guide document.

Works 4.0 - 32-Bit Windows

Recommendation: Install the Year 2000 update for Microsoft Works. To request the update on CD-ROM call 888-673-8925 toll free.

Date handling: After the update, two-digit shortcuts from 00 to 29 are interpreted to be in the 2000s, (e.g. 21 is 2021). Two-digit shortcuts from 30 to 99 are interpreted to be in the 1900s.

For more information: See the Works 4.0 Product Guide document.

Works (Macintosh) 4.0

Recommendation: To ensure the correct century is being used, enter and display year values in four digits.

Date handling: Microsoft Works 4.0 for the Macintosh interprets two-digit entries for years in four different ways, depending on the date range setting in the Macintosh operating system.

If the operating system date range is set for:

1920 - 1990, shortcuts 00 - 03 are interpreted as invalid dates; 04 - 99 are interpreted to be years in the 1900s.

1991 - 1999, shortcuts 00 - 10 are interpreted to be years in the 2000s; 11 - 99 are interpreted to be years in the 1900s.

2000 - 2010, shortcuts 00 - 40 are interpreted to be years in the 2000s; 41 - 90 are interpreted as invalid dates; 91 - 99 are interpreted to be years in the 1900s.

For more information: See the Works (Macintosh) 4.0 Product Guide document.

Works 3.0 - 16-Bit Windows

Recommendation: Use the Works 3 Data Assessment Tool to analyze your spreadsheet data to determine the four digit actual storage of dates that were entered with only two digit years.

Microsoft recommends entering four-digits for years in cells.

Please note that no Year 2000 software updates are planned for Works 3.0 or earlier.

Date handling: Four digits must be entered for the year 2000 and later. If a date is entered with a two-digit year (i.e. 6/1/98), Works interprets the year to be in the 1900s.

Once the four-digit year has been entered, it can be formatted to display only two digits for the year. If the cell is edited after the date format has been changed to a two-year format, Works again interprets the year to occur in the 1900s.

For more information: See the Works 3.0 Product Guide document.
