General Tips

To ensure that dates in Word documents are represented correctly in date-related calculations, insert Date field types with four-digit years.

See the Year 2000 Product Guide for each of the Microsoft Office programs you use for information on how they handle dates.

Office 2000 Standard - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Office Standard (Macintosh) 98 (English)
Office Standard 97 - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Office Standard 95 - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Office Standard 4.XX - 16-Bit Windows (English)
Office Standard (Macintosh) 4.2 (English)

Office 2000 Standard - 32-Bit Windows

Recommendation: No action necessary.

See the Year 2000 Product Guide for your computer operating system and install prerequisite updates for Year 2000 compliance.

Date handling: If only the last two digits of the year are pasted from one Office program into another, the date might be interpreted differently than the originating program interpreted it.

Unless the user changes the way the program interprets two-digit years, values between 00 and 29 are interpreted to be between 2000 and 2029 and values between 30 and 99 are interpreted to be between 1930 and 1999.

For more information: See the Office 2000 Standard Product Guide document. See the Year 2000 Product Guide for each of the Microsoft Office programs you use.

Office Standard (Macintosh) 98

Recommendation: If you use PowerPoint 98, install PP 8-4 Translator version 8.04 for correct handling of short dates in the 21st century (2000s) when saving presentations to PowerPoint 4.0 format.

See Knowledge Base article "XL98: Year 2000 Wizards for Microsoft Excel 98" for information on wizards designed to help you prepare Excel dates for the year 2000.

Date handling: When the table sort command is used, Word 98 interprets two-digit years from 00 to 29 to be years between 2000 and 2029.

Two-digits years entered in PowerPoint 98, are not converted to four-digit years.

Excel 98 interprets two-digit years less than 20 to be in the 2000s and two-digit years 21 or larger to be in the 1900s.

For more information: See the Office Standard (Macintosh) 98 Product Guide document. See the Year 2000 Product Guide for each of the Microsoft Office programs you use.

Office Standard 97 - 32-Bit Windows

Recommendation: Install the Office 97 Service Release 2 Update. To request the update on CD-ROM call 888-673-8925 toll free.

See the Year 2000 Product Guide for your computer operating system and install prerequisite updates for Year 2000 compliance.

OR, install Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 and the Outlook Express 4.01 SP2 Year 2000 Update.

See Knowledge Base article "XL97: Year 2000 Wizards for Microsoft Excel 97" for information on wizards designed to help you prepare Excel dates for the year 2000.

Date handling: When two-digit shortcuts are entered, values between 00 and 29 are interpreted to be years between 2000 and 2029 and shortcuts between 30 and 99 are interpreted to be between 1930 and 1999.
