General Tips

Ensure your regional settings short date format is set to mm/dd/yyyy or another option that displays four-digit years.

You can create custom formats in Access to limit the display and entry of years to four digits.

Use the Date fields when storing dates in tables. Avoid using Text fields to store dates-especially when calculations are based on this data.

Use four-digit years when importing or exporting data.

Access 2000 9.0 - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Access 97 version 8.0 - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Access 95 version 7.0 - 32-Bit Windows (English)
Access 2.0 - 16-Bit Windows (English)

Access 2000 9.0 - 32-Bit Windows

Recommendation: No action necessary.

Note: The easiest way to make sure that dates are specified with accuracy for the century is to create an Input Mask that allows entry of only four-digit years.

Date handling: Dates are interpreted by using the automation libraries. For more information, see the white paper, "The Automation Libraries and the Year 2000".

By default, dates are displayed in general date format, which is a combination of short date and short time (for example, m/d/yy), as specified in Control Panel Regional Settings. Custom formats can be created to display years as four digits.

For more information: See the Access 2000 Product Guide document.

Access 97 8.0 - 32-Bit Windows

Recommendation: Install Office 97 Service Release 2. To request it on CD-ROM call 888-673-8925 toll free.

Install the Jet35sp2.exe update from the Knowledge Base article, "Updated Version of Microsoft Jet 3.5 Available on MSL".

Date handling: Dates are interpreted by using the automation libraries. For more information, see the white paper, "The Automation Libraries and the Year 2000".

When two-digit shortcuts are entered for years, 00 - 29 Access interprets them to be years between 2000 and 2029 and interprets 30 - 99 to be between 1930 and 1999.

For more information: See the Access 97 Product Guide document.

Access 95 7.0 - 32-Bit Windows

Recommendation: Install Microsoft Office 95 Year 2000 update. To request it on CD-ROM call 888-673-8925 toll free.

Date handling: Dates are interpreted by using the automation libraries. For more information, see the white paper, "The Automation Libraries and the Year 2000".

When two-digit shortcuts are entered for years, 00 - 29 in Access interprets them to be years between 2000 and 2029 and interprets 30 - 99 to be between 1930 and 1999.

For more information: See the Access 95 Product Guide document.

Access 2.0 - 16-Bit Windows

Recommendation: Install the updated Acc2Date.exe.

Date handling: By default, Access 2.0 interprets dates that are entered by the user or imported from a text file as occurring in the 1900s. After installing the Acc2Date.exe, two-digit shortcuts 00 - 29 are interpreted to be years between 2000 and 2029; 30 - 39 are interpreted to be between 1930 and 1999.

For more information: See the Access 2.0 Product Guide document.
