The discovery of the structure of DNA, the substance that makes up genes, by the American biologist James D. Watson and the British biologist Francis H. C. Crick initiated knowledge of the exact molecular basis of genetics. This knowledge is leading to the ability to provide gene therapy for medical conditions, to manufacture important medications, and to predict and eventually to prevent many diseases. The molecular composition of the entire human genome will be known in the next century. More information: |
