Open from a scanner
A scanner is a deviceA component that can be plugged into a computer, such as a digital camera, scanner, printer, or disk drive. that converts pictures and text into digital images that computers can use. Picture It! supports two types of scanner formats: TWAINSoftware that allows communication between image-capturing devices, such as digital cameras, and your computer. and WIAThe standard software that allows communication between image-capturing devices and your computer. WIA provides greater control over such devices than similar software..
If your scanner doesn't use a TWAIN or WIA interface, you need to use the software designed specifically for the make and model of your scanner. Many scanner manufacturers provide free updates to their drivers on the Web.
To connect your scanner:

Install the software that came with your scanner.

Turn off your scanner and computer.

Attach the connector cable from your scanner to your computer.

Turn on your scanner and computer.
To scan your picture using Picture It!:

Connect your scanner to your computer, and then turn on the scanner.

On the File menu, point to Get Picture From, and then click Scanner.

Under Select a scanner, select a scanner.
 | Optional: Change scanner type.
- Click Change scanner type.
- Identify your type of scanner.

If you choose Flatbed scanner, click OK and proceed to step 4 below.
- or -
If you choose Other, Picture It! will not be able to scan your picture using its own software. To scan using your scanner's software, click OK and follow these additional steps. Disregard steps 4-7 below.
- In the Scan Picture task pane, choose whether you want help editing your scanned picture.

If you choose No, insert your picture on the scanner, click Scan, and then follow your scanner's software instructions.

If you choose Yes, follow these additional steps:
- Insert your picture on the scanner, and click Scan.
- Follow your scanner's software instructions.
- When the scan is complete, click one or more editing options.
- Click Done after each edit.
You will be returned to the editing option task pane after each edit.
- When you have finished all of your edits, click Done on the editing option task pane.
- Click Done.

Place your picture on the scanner.

Select Automatic Scan.

Click Scan.

Click Done.
To scan your picture using your scanner's software:

Connect your scanner to your computer, and then turn on the scanner.

On the File menu, point to Get Picture From, and then click Scanner.

Under Select a scanner, select a scanner.
 | Optional: Change scanner type.
- Click Change scanner type.
- Identify your type of scanner.

If you choose Flatbed scanner, click OK and proceed to step 4 below.

If you choose Other, Picture It! will automatically use your scanner's software. Click OK and follow these additional steps. Disregard steps 4-8 below.
- In the Scan Picture task pane, choose whether you want help editing your scanned picture.
If you choose Yes, an editing pane will appear after your scan is complete. If you choose No, your picture will simply appear in the workspace after your scan is complete.

If you choose No, insert your picture on the scanner, click Scan, and then follow your scanner's software instructions.

- Insert your picture on the scanner, and click Scan.
- Follow your scanner's software instructions.
- When the scan is complete, click one or more editing options.
- Click Done after each edit.
You will be returned to the editing option task pane after each edit.
- When you have finished all of your edits, click Done on the editing option task pane.
- Click Done.

To straighten or crop your picture after scanning, or to fix the levelsThe intensity of the shadows, midtones, and highlights of a picture. automatically, select the Help me fix my picture after scanning check box.

Click Scan.

Follow the instructions for your scanner's software.

Click Done.

If your scanner is not a flatbed model, consult your scanner documentation on how to use it.
Note
The first time you connect your scanner, the Identify Scanner Type dialog box will open, asking you to identify the scanner.

For more information about installing drivers and connecting your scanner, consult your scanner's manual.
Tips

For the best scanning results, clean the scanner surface with camera lens cleaner or household window cleaner. Make sure the scanner surface is dry before you place your picture on it.
