I was wondering about budget hotels in European cities where
the showers are down the hall. how much privacy is there...
Is it typically a small bathroom, like what you have at
home, so its one person at a time and you lock the door
behind you -or- is it a couple of shower stalls in a large
room, with just a shower curtain for privacy, so anyone can
walk in? anyone have any unfortunate incidents?

It's just like your own bathroom, when you're in there---when you're not, it's ssomebody else's. It's also nice that somebody else pays for most of it, which saves you maybe $20 a night. That's $600 a month, which is how much rent as typikcal American family pays for their entire house.
HI!
OSmetimes the bathrooms are with shower curtains only, but
it's prettu rare. Jim is right, in most of the cases you can
lock the door behind you and have your "own" bathroom.
I find that Europeans are less bothered about displaying
their bodies than we English-speaking types, even if
they're not particularly great specimens. I remember a
hostel in Venice where my friend and I (both Brits) changed
demurely under our towels whilst a group of bronzed Swedish
girls swanned around the bathroom starkers. Also, in many
countries it's normal for saunas and steam baths to have
mixed, naked bathing. There's nothing pervy about it, it's
just what they do. You just have to pretend you've been
doing it all your life as well and it's OK.
