Mai Phoung G/H Hang Be St Hanoi - $12 usd for a triple $7
for single(near the kitchen) has a restaurant which ghas
great value brekkys. Hot water shower. Really friendly
atmosphere 24hr access and is very central.
Auberge G/H Sapa - $7 usd a night for a double. Fantastic
terrace with unreal views over the alps. Great banana and
yoghurt shakes. Hot water shower, working fire places in
rooms.
Places I liked:
Sapa - don't need a guide just get a map from the Auberge
and take yourself out on walks. Stayed for 6 days and loved
it. Can do window shopping from the safety of the terrace
at the Auberge. Great place to chill.
Tam Coc - stunningly beautiful scenery. Was used in the
film Indochine. But make sure the boatsman takes you to all
3 caves.
Hoi An - Shoppers and eaters paradise. Full of excellent
and cheap tailors. Cafe De Amis does 5 course seafood
dinners for $4 usd and so does the Mermaid Cafe. Has a
great beach too
Cat Ba Island beach - fantastic not only for scenery but
there are NO hawkers as you have to pay to get on.
Saigon - just because it is absolutely manic. When walking
across the road just walk at a steady pace - do not speed
up or slow down or stop-the traffic will go around you.
Hanoi - too many to name. Hoan Kiem lake in the centre with
it's tranquility amidst it all. Moca Cafe for great food,
the culture, culture, culture.
No you do not need to speak Vietnamese. Most people speak
english and the street kids are the best at it. If you
speak French that is a bonus b/c loads of the oldies there
speak it.
Have a fab time !!
I traveled for 2 weeks in vietnam alone and had no
problems...
