I am a tall 28 year old blonde arriving alone in Bangkok
late at night (10:45 pm) in July. Where is a good place to
stay overnight? I will be departing the next day at 1 pm.
I want something nice, clean and safe for around $25-$50 US
(1000-2000 baht). I am wary of the cheap guest
houses--arriving so late, I want to feel confident that the
place will be acceptable--it's not like a morning arrival
when I can walk to another location. Right now I am
considering La Residence (found 990 baht rate), the Siam
Intercontinental (found 2000 baht rate), and the Atlanta
(expect 500-900 baht rates). I think they are all pretty
different--does anyone have any experience with them? I
want fairly easy access to the airport but somewhere where I
can see something quickly in the morning.
How should I get to the hotel? Are buses etc. still running
or should I take a taxi?

There are booking desks at the airport when you come out,
even in the middle of the night. They have photo albums of
rooms: tell them your price and they'll show you a room.
They are not just pesky touts! Many of the deals include
the return taxi back to the airport and breakfast. But you
should realise how bad the traffic is in Bangkok, hence the
furthur away the hotel, the cheaper the accomodation, and
so the closer to the airport, the more expensive the room
will be due to the convienience.
We stayed in guest houses all over Thailand and never had a
problem (at least with the ones LP recommended). We
were always in the rock bottom cheapest, too. Always
clean. The dirtiest place was a hotel, actually. There are
so many falangs (tourists) in some guest house areas that
you'll probably be safe. Use your guidebook.
Bankok is huge and the traffic is horrendous. Try not to
venture too far from the airport.
I stayed at the Comfort Inn under the same circumstances as
you. Good points - it's really close to the airport (5
minute cab ride) and reasonably comfortable. bad points -
it's really close to the airport, so you are very conscious
of planes landing and taking off most of the night; and if
you venture into Bangkok, every cab driver has trouble
finding the place again.
Ask your agent to book something for you for the first
night. I had to do this as I arrived 9.00pm at night and
flew out to Vietnam at 8.30 the next morning. I stayed in a
hotel in Siam Square and it was a very good hotel, four star
(god forbid, I can't remember the name!). The point is this
hotel should have cost $100-$120AUS per night but because it
was an STA Travel property it only cost $50AUS for the
night. I wouldn't suggest trying to get into a guesthouse,
they're often full and who needs that trouble for only one
night. Spoil yourself.
