I am going to UK and Europe in summer 2000 and the idea of organised bus tours does not appeal. However I haven't travelled before and would appreciate advice on staying in hostels vs B&Bs for the mature traveller (over 50). I would prefer to drive in the UK and use trains or buses in Europe. What do you say?

Dear Margo I am also over 50. I have travelled a great deal.
In Britain I mostly stayed in B&Bs because I feel the crowd
in hostels are a bit young for me now. Also I really need my
sleep. I took a Eurailpass around Europe. Trains mostly go
everywhere and you meet lots of people. It can also be good
to adveertise for someone to go with. My friend and I met
via the thorntree and we are going to Africa soon. Please
email me if you want any more information. Travel is great

My dad stays in UK "Youth" hostels regularly with a group
of his walking friends, who are all in their 50s or 60s. I
think hostels vs B&B depends to some extent on your budget.
B&Bs are generally nicer if you want to spend the money,
although this IS a generalisation as there are some real
dives out there, conversely some hostels are relatively
luxurious. Why not try some of each - hostels when you want
to meet people and B&Bs when you feel like peace and quiet?
You go girl, your never too young. Here's a 60 year old
philosopher's address from England that I met while
traveling SE Asia... I ma sure he could give you advice.
