At the end of June a girlfriend and I will be travelling
from Barcelona to Venice within a span of 5 days, is this
possible without seeing things in a blurr? What is the
most beautiful place on the south shore of France? How about
Aix en Provence - anyone been there? We plan to travel from
there through Florence and north to Venice. We're also
wondering about Hostels/Hotels through these areas and
dealing with the locals knowing minimal french and
phrasebook Italian!

I spent about 5 days in Barcelona 2 years ago, and loved it. I took the train to the monastery at Montserrat (about 1 hr north of Barcelona), gorgeous views! Catch it if you possibly can. Nice was nice, too.
There can be no question that it will all be a blur, but I imagine 5 days is an externally imposed max for you. At least you'll get a feeling for where you'd like to spend some time when you return!

Aix. I headed to Aix because I had see what Peter Mayle
saw. Eh... got a little bored after and hour.

  3. St. Paul de Vence? Added by: Beck (rebecca.w1@virgin.net)

I don't know what you're in to, but one of the most
interesting places I visited in the south of France was a
little town called, "St.Paul de Vence". If you're into the
art scene, it's ideal- many of the impressionists either
lived or worked here, and Chagall is buried in the local
churchyard!! If you're not into art, it has good views and
good places to hang out and sample the local food/wine. Just
one warning, this being the South of France, it's a
favourite with the rich and famous, so you'll probably have
to stay nearby. I stayed at the local campsite, which was
    excellent.
As for languages, the areas you'll be visiting are popular
with the tourists, so locals tend to be good at English.

Your going to see A) the trains B) the trains C) the
trains. Unless of course you fly, which gives you a few
peak hours to see SOMETHING... really bad idea.
