i'am planning my summer holidays but before i book my flight
could anyone answer the following questions as i can't seem
to get a straight answer from anywhere(guidebooks, brochure
even these postings)
1.what will the weather be like in bali, penang, singapore
and koh samui during august ie:how many hours of
sun,temperature,monsoon!! etc)?
2.how much is a bottle of domestic beer in these
places.?
3.how much is an average one way flight between these
places and are there planes "safe"?
4.at what time do the bars get busy and at what hour do
they close, and do you have to pay to get into the popular
clubs?
5.as a single male traveller am i going to be hastled
and made to feel "unsafe" in these areas?
6.where is the best place to meet up with fellow
travellers?
i would be greatful for any answers and
comments...cheers..glenn

    5. Not unless you get to pissed.
    6. Reggea pub, Green Mango etc.

Pick up SE Asia on a Shoestring.

  3. weather fine Added by: rm
[Timestamp: Fri 14 May, 17:01 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Monsoon shouldn't set in until October in Ko Samui.

  4. Bali Added by: The Kepala Desa (Village Chief)

Bali weather is fine during August, but it is one of the
busiest and most crowded months of the year because of all
the tourists of all ages. A large bottle of Bintang or
Anker or Bali Hai beer is about U.S. $ 1 - $ 1.25 at most
budget cafes, but more at the up-market restaurants, clubs,
and hotels. My experience is that August is not a good
month for single guys looking to meet and talk to other real
travellers because there are alot of couples travelling
during mid-summer, and they are not the greatest at wanting
to talk to single guys. As for clubs, the # 1 spot is the
"S.C. Club" along Jalan Legian near its intersection with
    Poppies Gang 2 in Kuta Beach. It's packed-out by 9:00 P.M.
and goes 'til about 1:00 A.M. At times there are lots of
prostitutes that hang-out across the street from this club,
but the police don't allow them to be there much anymore.

that you were just having a lend of these kind people?

why would i be have a "lend"(you must also be a fellow brit)
i seriously wanted answers to those questions as every guide
i read has conflicting answers..so i thought fellow
travellers would be more reliable...so buff how much does a
tin of beans cost ?(only joking!!)

  7. No I'm not a fellow Brit!!! Added by: Buffy
[Timestamp: Mon 17 May, 0:07 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Aiyoo no way am I a pom lah!
no, actually I am an Australian who has lived in this part
of the world (ie SEA) for 10 years now.
are you serious that you cannot find weather information,
nightlife info and airfare info on the net??? Show a little
imagination mate! It's nice of these people to give you the
info but surely you could do a little more research...By
the way are you interested in knowing anything about the
    language/currency/religion/economic/political backgrounds
of the places you are visiting?? I'm not trying to be
argumentative...I'm just so TIRED of the "how wet is a
monsoon" question! It rains..it's wet rain!!!Bring an
umberella lah! Besides if you are in a bar...what
    difference does it make?

  8. alright lah Added by: glenn
[Timestamp: Mon 17 May, 4:19 Tasmanian Standard Time]

buffy....how did you know i was from liverpool (lah is a
real "scouse" expression)..i take your point about my lack
    of research...but i have tried...all i wanted was straight
answers..up to date answers...so how about it mate..you must
know the real answers to my questions..any replies would be
    much appreciated......ps...how wet is a monsoon???..cheers

  9. A monsoon is as wet as a beer Added by: Buffy
[Timestamp: Mon 17 May, 21:05 Tasmanian Standard Time]

"lah' is actually a bahasa malayu expression!!!It is also
used very commonly in Singapore. Practice saying it lah! on
    the end of everything lah!
A monsoon is as wet as a beer. Practice "Satu Lagi beer"
(one more beer!)...Scousers!!! At least this should be a
    useful expression for you.
"Terimah Kasih" means thank you..please be polite.
Just to prove I can be a nice "bloke"...
    SINGAPORE
    Sun comes up in morning,
Sun goes down at night...about 12 hours between each event
    all year round.
At the moment we are averaging one electrical storm a day
with temp range 25-33C. Beware of lightning and carry an
umbrella if you are afraid of water. Other times...hot &
    sunny.
Singapore Supermarket beer prices...aboutS$2.20 a can for
Anchor/Carlsberg. General consensus is that Anchor gives
worse headaches. Many seem to prefer Tiger despite it's
moronic advertising campaigns ("If I was a beer...."). I
can confirm that there is currently a special on
Boddingtons at S$4.40 a can (the ones with the widget). In
a hotel bar a beer could cost you as much as S$12 a glass
incl service tax. A jug might start at S$30. Happy hours
are the way to go. Or drink with the locals at a "coffee
    shop".
Some places to try for nightlife...if you are after
desperate disco plus ladies of the night...Orchard
Towers...hefty cover charges usually include "first
drink".It used to be around the $30 mark.
For young professionals...try Boat Quay and the now
    infamous "Harry's Bar"..(remember Nick Leasson?)
or "No.5" in Emerald Hill. For interesting sidewalk...try
Deskar Road "Fosters Bar" in Little India..I think you will
    like this one !
I have no idea when they close...after midnight but before
    2 am I would think.
My favorite is "Anywhere's" in Tanglin Shopping Centre.
Bars all get busy when people finish work!! around 7pm on.
There are always people out but obviously Fri and Sat night
would be the busiest nights for locals and expats. There
are hundreds and hundreds of places..try looking at
Singapore expat website. Travellers probably hang mostly in
    Little India.
Will you be hassled? Why , do you have two heads? In
Singapore if you don't hassle anyone no one will hassle
you. They might discreetly inquire if you are interested in
a copy watch or a girl. Refrain from the general groping of
women otherwise you might find yourself up on charges of
"outraging someone's modesty". Don't start a drunken brawl
or throw a chair through your hotel window , and I am sure
you'll be fine. By the way there are penalties for not
    flushing the toilet.
Ask one more time about the weather and i'll make sure to
hassle you!!! What are you planning to do during the
daylight hours of your holiday ...or are you a vampire
    scouse.
