S'pore Accomodations & Side trips

Hi...any suggestions for a cheap and decent place to stay in
Singapore? I hear that a number of the budget places are
closing down.
Also, I plan to going to either Bintan or Batam as a side
trip. Is this a good day trip, or is it better to spend the
night (if so, where?). If I goto Bintan, do you recommend
taking the ferry from the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal or the
World Trade Center Terminal? Thanks!

My favorite low cost, central, well kept, well run place to
stay is the YWCA, Fort Canning Lodge. Very nice. About US
    $50 and up.
The ferry to Bintan only leaves from Tanah Merah now.
Bintans' main city ,Tanjong Pinang ,is not much of a
tourist spot, hot, noisy, dirty and full of men trying to
get into Singapore. If you go head to the east shore area.
Still pretty low key as far as activities go but better
than the city. Hotels are not so good there either, very
    basic and not too clean.

Why bother? It ain't quaint or beautiful. Bintan likewise.
If you just want a boat ride, do a harbor tour, and then
hang around Sentosa for the day.

  4. Cheap? US$50 and up? Added by: Johan

I wouldn't think that this corresponds to "cheap" or
"budget"...at least not to me...and certainly not equivalent
to those places shutting down. I guess that's why I never
thought Singapore, with its $5 beers and pricey discos and
boutiques was that much of a bargain. If the close down
places like Lee's, I'll stop flying Singapore Air Lines and
head through KL in the future. My tour groups into SE Asia
can find outfitters there equally as inexpensively.

You can spend a day or two on Bintan if you're into sea
sports or simply just want to relax there. Mana Mana resort
is more affordable & you can buy a package from Singapore
    travel agents.

  7. Karimun Added by: Matthias (matthias_reising@hotmail.com)
[Timestamp: Sat 15 May, 23:31 Tasmanian Standard Time]

I was in Singapore twice, last August for one week. I spent
my time at the Waffle's Homestay at North Bridge Road (dorm
9 SGD) and found it good and centrally located.
I did a day tour to the Indonesian island Pulau Karimun.
Ferries leave from WTC, cost about 40 SGD. It is a small
island with very friendly people and hardly any western
tourists. I spent my day just walking around the town and
enjoying the quiet and regular scenery of the people living
there. It's inexpensive and you'll find many beautiful
    places.
Singapore itself is quite boring after a while. 3 days are
    enough.
    Cheers, Matthias

several years ago and it was filthy but interesting. Is it
    any cleaner now?

  9. Geylang Added by: Teh (tehmc@pc.jaring.my)
[Timestamp: Sun 16 May, 23:46 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Try the Geylang area.. there are plenty of cheapies there,
below US$40 and it is handy to city. Don't waste your time
checking out the islands around Singapore. The islands off
the east coast of peninsular Malaysia have a lot more to
    offer and far better value.
