Please help cos I'm in a severe state of distress. For the
last god knows how long I've been wishin me life away. All
that's been in m'head is escaping the rain of Manchester to
the sun blessed beaches of what I thought was a land of
tropical wonderment...But no, all I've heard is you lot
slaggin the place off...Please tell me that the 4 weeks
we're planning to spend in between Bali, Lombok and the
Gilis will be as great as we're expecting.
Any ideas for the bezziest places for either mad days and
nights or chilled sun blessed delights?

  1. GREAT TIME! Added by: Dan (raynman@goplay.com)
[Timestamp: Thu 13 May, 3:11 Tasmanian Standard Time]

You'll have a GREAT time!!! Don't listen to all the
smart-asses - you are going to a place where the people are
friendly, the beaches are beautiful, and you'd have to try
awfully HARD to have a bad time. Some of these people are
just too damned cool in their own minds to have fun ...
they're like the types that like the latest music until
someone else likes it too, then they have to find something
    else ... they're snobs!!
so ... go have a great time ... if you want further info,
feel free to e-mail me with any specific questions

  2. Agree with Dan Added by: RM
[Timestamp: Thu 13 May, 7:04 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Go to Bali...you will love it. It really depends on your
perspective. If your thing is going where nobody else goes,
Bali may not be the place, but if you want to go to a
beautiful island with great food, great culture, cheap
accomodation, lots of opportunities for fun, where you can
also meet "real people" along the way (i.e. not the idiots
on Kuta Beach), then Bali is definately a great place to go.
People also tend to slam Bali because they've travelled so
much that Bali just seems too boring and touristy to them,
which I can understand. If you're looking for adventure, I
wouldn't exactly pick Bali for a trip, but many people don't
need that. The Gilis are fine also. I was there in July a
few years ago (Gili Tarawangan) and loved it. Plenty of
sunshine, beautiful water, some nice snorkelling, no cars,
very relaxing. If you have very little travelling
experience or haven't been to SE Asia ever, I think Bali and
Lombok are a great choice. If you get bored, you can always
check out the rest of Indonesia (provided the political
situation is okay). Bottom line: don't listen to these
people. Stop checking the lp thorn tree for your own good,
you'll talk yourself out of having a good time in Bali.
This has got to be the most scritinizing, often attacking
travel board I've ever seen. People will rip anything and
everything here, simply because they can hide behind their
anonymity (like I'm doing!). There's also some great
information exchanged here, just read things here with a
grain of salt. Genuine travel warnings are one thing, but
bashing other people's hopes of a good time is another.
Check out the rec.travel.asia newsgroup, lots of friendlier
people there willing to offer positive tips rather than put
    down a great place.

  3. Don't Despair, You Can Modify Your Plans Added by: Max
[Timestamp: Thu 13 May, 7:17 Tasmanian Standard Time]

It's never too late to make modifications to your plans.
Unless you've pre-paid for your holiday you can still fly to
Sulawesi and spend 10 - 12 days out of your 4 weeks, and
have the best of all worlds. Fly to Ujung Pandang on
Sulawesi, take a bus up to Rantepao in Tana Toraja. Spend
about 4 days. Then bus it back to Ujung Pandang and fly from
there to Manado and go to Bunaken for some of the best
snorkling and diving in South East Asia. Then fly back to
Bali. This "itinerary" should be about 10 - 12 days
maximum, with a minimum of hassles. So do it, you'll add
diversity to your trip. It will cost you the extra airfare,
    but it's worth it.

  4. Bali is Alright... Added by: Johan
[Timestamp: Thu 13 May, 8:43 Tasmanian Standard Time]

if your idea of "exotic" is going to an away game of
Manchester United vs. Chelsea and having a tiff at a Thai
restaurant. Kuta, particularly, is a lot like going down to
the old Chelsea games, if you know what I meam. But if you
get away from Kuta/Denpasar you might find some places that
are less crowded than the Cote d'Azur or Malta during
    holidays. Try the northwest coast.

  5. ??????` Added by: Manc' Lass
[Timestamp: Thu 13 May, 23:47 Tasmanian Standard Time]

Why on earth would you want to escape the sunny climes of
Manchester when you have Royales, Piccadilly 21's and other
amazing pubs and clubs and go half way round the world???

  6. agree with Dan & R.M. Added by: karen
[Timestamp: Sat 15 May, 16:54 Tasmanian Standard Time]

    Really agree with both
This "Thorn Tree" has some amazing info but people need to
remember and respect that we all expect different things out
    of our HOLIDAYS.
This is dependent on many aspects. The good thing about
Bali is that whatever you're looking for you can find it.
Little babies/children to grannies can have a wonderful time
whether it be backpacking and staying in budget losemens or
spending heaps on Five star accomodation.
Go check it out for yourself I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

  7. UK - Bali too ! Added by: XeN + CaZ (seanlewis@xenpc.karoo.co.uk)

I & my wife (to be) are taking our honeymoon in Bali in
June `99 - Yep, right through the election peroid ! However
after reading most of the posts here, I think it should be
fine. Use your noggin, don't be alone at night, keep money,
valuables safe as poss, don't get into the politics, and
above all DO ENJOY YOURSELF ! Same rules apply to every
    country you visit
