Hi,
I am planning to follow my boyfriend to live/work in
Manila. I would be grateful for any
information/comments/general advice on living there and I
would particularly appreciate to get in contact by email
with expats already at place.
Thanks in advance!

  1. Culture Shock Added by: vm

there are great books on the market called Culture Shock.
There is a Culture Shock of the Philippines, Culture Shock
of Thailand and so on. They are in most book shops that
have a decent travel section. I can't tell you the authors
name because each country is written by a different author.
the books cover almost everything from living in the
desired country to marrying a person from the desired
country. they cover the countries customs and what is and
is not expected of you. I recommend reading up on the
Philippines in that book as well as gathering other info.
    from your posting.

make very, very, very certain you love the man you're with
because manila will test your relationship to its limits.
it's a grey miserable city with a horrific traffic problem
for which they have not even started to work out a
solution. if your spouse works 5.50 to 5.75 days a week like
most expats you must make sure you get out of the city at
least once every 4 - 6 weeks, preferably by plane to
somewhere nice within the country. i was there for two years
and was never so glad as to get on the plane for the last
    time out of the place.
    !
now that's just manila - the rest of the countrey is a bit
of a shambles but OK, and the people are tremendous as well
    - i should know, there's one snoring at me now as i write
    this.

  3. Try Cebu Added by: MM

I suggest you try Cebu not Manila. You'd be nearer to nice
beaches and islands (ex. Bohol, Malapascua). Manila is
filthy and I can't wait to get out of it...
